American Idol’s Phillip Phillips announces first new album in five years
Ahead of appearing as a mentor on American Idol Hollywood Week on Sunday (April 2), Phillip Phillips releases a new song alongside a big announcement.
The American Idol season 11 winner released a new song “Before I Loved You,” from his upcoming album, Drift Back, due out on June 9.
“SURPRISE! My first album in 5 years, Drift Back, is coming to you June 9th,” Phillip wrote on social media. “This album holds some of my favorite songs I’ve ever written, including the new single “Before I Loved You…get ready for NEW MUSIC this summer!”
Drift Back will be Phillips fourth studio album. He released Collateral in January 2018. Before that Behind the Light came out in 2014. And he released his post-Idol debut The World for the Side of the Moon in 2012, six months after his American Idol win.
The forthcoming set, Drift Back will be Phillip’s first independently released album. The first three albums were released as part of his post-show record deal with 19 Recordings/Interscope Recordings. He and the label parted ways a few years after a messy legal struggle with 19 Entertainment.

Additionally, Phillip is putting together a music video and is asking his fans to help. He writes on social media, “I’m making a new music video for my new song “Before I Loved You” and I would love for you to upload your photos to the link in my bio of you and your loved one for a chance to be in the video! It’s going to be special and y’all are special to me so I wanted you to be a part of this!”
