America’s Got Talent 2024 Top 12 Semi-Finals Preview
Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara sit on the judges panel. Terry Crews is host.
Pranysqa Mishra – Kid singer
The 10 year old singer is Heidi’s audition Golden Buzzer. This time, her grandmother is by her side for moral support. She’s her good luck charm.
Pranysqa struggles with pitch as she sings Panic at the Disco’s “High Hopes.” The high notes are rough. But that’s due to her inexperience and age. Parents would be wise to keep kids out of big competitions until they are more mature. Her dress is pretty. Maybe Heidi helped her pick it out.
Heidi is proud, “You gave us such a moment,” she says and hopes America votes. Howie calls her powerful voice angelic. Sofia compliments her confidence. Simon declares, “Gutsy gutsy gutsy.” He feels that she carried the whole song herself, without a big orchestra or choir.
Kelsey Jane – Acrobat
She didn’t tell her parents that she auditioned for AGT. She’s always wanted to be an aerialist, even if the makes the big money as a dentist!
For a self-described amateur, Kelsey is impressive. When does she even practice while working as a dentist? She’s not the most skilled acrobat to perform on AGT, but her routines are elegant, flowing and pretty to watch.
“It kind of took my breath away,” says Heidi. She’s impressed by Kelsey’s grace. Sofia calls her routine elegant and beautiful. Simon can’t figure out how she can be a dentist and be so good. He calls her stunning. “This is actually staggeringly good.” Howie jokes, “This is an amazing dental plan.” Kelsey claims if she wins the million dollars, she’ll still work as a dentist! That ‘s like comedian Ken Jeong who kept working as a medical doctor even after starring in hit movies.
Alex Sampson – Singer
Simon in particular, loves Alex’s original songs, which hearkens back to an older era. He suggests that his next song be more emotional and meaningful.
Man. I know Simon doesn’t care when a cute guy sings off-key, but Alex continues to have pitch problems. This time he sings a heartbreak song titled “Wallflower,” that’s decidedly more contemporary sounding. While he’s abandoning the thing Simon liked about him, the song is pop that could be played on the radio today.
Sofia calls him “adorable” and notes the girls are going crazy. Howie believes Alex will go all the way and be the star of the season. “You look like a movie star,” says Heidi. Simon says, “I have a lot of respect for you. I really really hope the audience votes you through to the final. You deserve it.” It wasn’t his favorite song, however. I had a feeling abandoning the retro thing would disappoint him.
Young Min – Magician
Korean magician, Young Min, is creating a new routine he hopes will wow the judges and viewers at home.
This time, he kneels on the floor as he performs his unique magic with sand. Now, he incorporates glowing star-like lights into his act. His tricks are simple, yet mesmerising. The light he commands is like a glowing fireball. With a gesture, he changes into a white outfit. It’s like he’s ascending to heaven!
Howie calls him original. Even when he’s confused, he’s still mesmerised. I agree with Howie. Heidi thinks his previous performances were stronger. Simon liked him the last time. But he didn’t care for the new routine. He didn’t find it at all showstopping. Sofia loved it. “You’re the whole package.”
Ashes & Arrows – Country trio
The group has been together for 3 years and feel they are at a crossroads. They polled their fans about what to sing next.
They continue to keep the vibe upbeat with a song titled “Hang On.” Their strength lies in the vocals and their ability to harmonize so beautifully together. Having said that–they sound a bit off pitch tonight? Or is that just me. The guy on piano definitely struggled during his solo. The songs they sing are propulsive and have the potential get a crowd on their feet and sing along.
Howard didn’t like them at first, but now he calls them the best act of the night. Simon agrees. He loved the song. “Really, really good.” Heidi call it their best performance. Sofia loves them. “The songs are amazing. People are going to love you and vote for you.”
Roni Sagi & Rhythm – Dog act
This act features the two “dancing” together, which sets them apart from other AGT dog acts. She’ll be using a prop for the first time tonight.
The prop is a ballet bar, and the music is “What a Feeling” from the movie Flashdance. The new routine is more jazzy and less ballroom. The doggo is very well trained, in addition to being adorable.
Heidi calls it a “winning performance.” She marvels at Roni’s patience and the exacting training. Sofia wants the puppy for herself. “She’s so perfect! Good job.” Simon, who loves dogs, calls it better than “anything.” He would score it a “10.” Howie gushes, “This was better than the movie!” He adds, “VOTE!”
Reid Wilson – Teen singer
Howie chose 14 year old Reid as one of his audition Golden Buzzers. The young singer listened to over 300 songs to pick the perfect cover.
Reid settles on a slowed down version of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.” His covers feature unusual arrangements. Does he find them on Tik Tok? Flipping songs on social media is a big thing. Reid’s vocals are also really unusual, and at 14 years old, he still sounds like a choir boy. With a fast vibrato, he hits all the high notes.
Howie calls his voice pure and beautiful. He hopes that America votes. Sofia says he made the popular song his own. Simon wasn’t sure about the song choice, until he hit some big notes. Heidi believes he’s gotten better and better.
Brent Street – Dance group
Both of Howie’s audition Golden buzzers made the semis. The 31 member dance group from Australia don’t dance full time. They all have day jobs.
The group’s angular routines are aggressively contemporary. Their use of props are always a highlight of the group’s performances. This time, the dancers move around and about large white blocks. it’s another performance featuring standout choreography.
Howie is very excited, on his feet. He calls them brilliant. “Write them a check for a million dollars,” He declares. Simon calls the routine “stunning.” He compares them to the Mayyas dance group, winners from a few years ago. He apologizes for not giving them more credit. Heidi compliments them for always finding a way to reinvent themselves.
Sofie Dossi and Sara James will perform together on Thursday’s results show! They are both in the audience tonight.
Richard Goodall – Singer
As Terry promoted Richard before the break, he stood off stage nervously wringing his hands. Poor guy! After his audition, his hometown welcomed him home as a hero. Simon suggested that he pick a song that nobody would expect.
He starts off a’cappella, which is always a crowd pleaser! But the song, “Eye of the Tiger” is hardly unexpected. So far, he’s stuck to popular 80’s power ballads. He’s got the pipes. Back in the day, in an alternate universe, he could have had a career with that strong and rangy voice. He still dresses like a janitor. The man needs a glow up! Maybe if he makes the final.
“Are you kidding me right now!” shouts Heidi about her Golden Buzzer. She begs America to vote. Simon claims he didn’t expect him to sing that song. “People love you.” Sofia loves his song choice. Howie remarks on his big heart. “We love you.”
Learnmore Jonasi – Comedian
Learnmore claims that before AGT comedy clubs wouldn’t book him. But now, he’s working stages. Howie suggested he tryout his material in front of live audiences before he performs it on the semis.
The comic jokes that American movies about Africa do not make sense to Africans. He wonders why the characters in Lion King don’t have accents. Learnmore manages to throw a British colonial joke in there. He giggles at his own bits! He ends with dog jokes that are actually kind of funny. Terry is proud of his audition Golden Buzzer.
Howie calls it “seamless.” He believes America will vote for him. Heidi hopes he makes it to the finale. Sofia thinks he deserves to be here. “You keep getting better and better.” Simon says, “That was so funny!” He probably liked being the subject of the dog jokes! “You have to be in the final.” Oh. Learnmore designed his jacket, and his sister made it.
Sky Elements – Drone act
Oh. One of the members lost his young daughter in 2021. Her death inspired him to leave his law career and create sky art with drones. “This performance is a love letter to my daughter.”
Like before, the routine was filmed with an audience outside, in front of the Pasadena theater. The judges and audience watch on a screen inside. The drones depict a father playing with his young daughter, followed by an illustration of his grief. The use of drones fits the theme–despite loss, our loved ones stay in our hearts, even as they now belong to the heavens.
Tears! Simon says, “That was..” He’s overcome. “Who knew that drones could make you so emotional,” says Sofia. “What a beautiful job.” Howie notes that the show is airing on 9/11. He calls it a great tribute. “You just broke us.” Heidi calls it a beautiful tribute to his daughter. “Thank you for sharing that with us.”
Solange Kardinaly – Quick change magic
She feels the pressure to keep raising the bar. She hoped to get the live golden buzzer and to have more time to work on a new act. But it didn’t work out that way.
Her quick changes are so seamless, at times she doesn’t even appear to touch or pull on the outfits. She performs in front of the judges desk. That’s risky being so close! Having said that, she didn’t exactly step up the act. But considering the time constraints, she gets a pass.
Simon predicts that the year will be life changing for her. Sofia calls her spectacular and special. Heidi thinks she gets more amazing each time. Howie compliments her on being able to present a great performance on such short notice. He declares her Vegas worthy.
