The Voice Alum Sarah Potenza Returns to the Big Stage on AGT Season 16
On this week’s America’s Got Talent, a The Voice fan favorite Sarah Potenza auditioned for a spot on season 16. (Read the full recap HERE)
Sarah may be a familiar face to you. She made the playoffs on Season 8 of The Voice on Team Blake Shelton and was a 4-chair turn in her audition. She is a fan-favorite who some still consider robbed. To date, her gravelly tone is still memorable as she continues to be a standout on blues, soul, and rock tracks. It was really fun to see her back on the big stage.
The 41-year-old singer from Rhode Island, exuded confidence, and as some noted may have looked a bit unrecognizable without her trademark big glasses. Sarah jokingly stated that she’s a “less is more kind of girl” when in reality she isn’t. She shared that she always knew she wanted to be a singer, and that finally she has found herself. She gives fellow artists great advice, saying that she doesn’t listen to others when they tell her that she’s too much.
Sarah sings “Worthy” by folk singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier (listen to the original HERE). Props to Sarah for choosing a song that seems to be from an independent artist and is not well-known. It has 41k views on YouTube. Sarah truly did it justice and showed America why they loved her in the first place. Her booming voice and gavelly rasp sounds like it belongs in the 70s and 80s.
Judge Simon Cowell said, “Wow. Sarah, Sarah, you just killed that.” He wondered if her song selection was written for her. The song was a cover, Sarah revealed, but she chose it because of the message. And, she added, the original sounds kind of country. Howie Mandel noted that she spread the “worthiness from within” on their stage. Sofia Vergara asked her what took her so long to get to the AGT stage, when in reality, it’s not her first competition show. Heidi Vergara called it incredible and noted the power in her voice.
Sarah sailed to the next round with 4 yeses.
In case you were wondering what Sarah has done since The Voice, recently she has collaborated with fellow voice alum and friend Katie Kadan. Here’s their cover of Adele’s “When We Were Young. Check it out HERE.
On this week’s America’s Got Talent 7th audition, it was really the singers who shined again. I wasn’t super impressed with the night’s lineup, but I enjoyed Sarah and fellow feature Ray Singleton who has a beautiful voice and sang for his wife who has been battling brain cancer.
