America’s Got Talent 2024 Audition Preview: Simon Cowell challenges singing group L6 to sing a’cappella
America’s Got Talent took a week off for the Olympic trials. But now, the show has returned to NBC with week 4 of auditions. Here is your first leak! L6, a family singing group from the Philippines, performed for the judges, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara and Simon Cowell.
The group, made up of five siblings and a niece from the Luntayao family, have already competed on Season 1 of Pilipinas Got Talent in 2010 where they made it to the grand finals, placing in 10th place. They also competed on The Voice Generations in the Philippines in 2023 and made it past the blind auditions and sing off rounds, but were then eliminated in the battles.
In the clip, a group member explained that back home, they work in the clothing business, but dream of buying a house big enough for their extended family to live in. More importantly, the group is competing because it was their late mother’s dream for them to compete on America’s Got Talent.
The group doesn’t get very far into a DRAMATIC performance of Eric Carmen’s “All By Myself” before Simon pulls out one of his tried and true AGT plot twists. He stops the group. The crowd boos. A couple of the female singers begin to cry.
But Simon didn’t buzz them, he only wanted them to sing the song a’cappella. “Lose the track,” he said, “In my opinion, the track was terrible.” Simon believes they have the potential to be a great a’cappella group. L6 takes up the challenge. They sing it so well, it’s hard to believe they haven’t practiced this song a’cappella, because they sing in tune and keep a good tempo. Are they being fed the track via in-ears?
“You could tell instantly this is a great singing group”
The audience and judges panel are all impressed with the group’s big vocals, range and harmonies. The singers were in tears afterward.
“You could tell instantly this is a great singing group,” Simon said. “How you just took on everything without the track. You were more unique, it was more special, it was more memorable, and you just absolutely nailed that.”
“Boss is always right,” Sofia chimed in. “Your voices didn’t need all that noise behind you. I think you guys are great. People are going to love you.”
Heidi said, “Everyone was so important in this song, how you melded together.” Heidi believes some people would have “run off” after Simon stopped them. (Simon stopping acts to either pick another song, or ditch is a thing he does at least once a season.)
“You are great at harmonizing,” said Howie. “Each one of you has much to offer as the next. As soon as you took the music away it was brilliant,” L6 received 4 yeses from the judges.
