The final week of Season 19 America’s Got Talent Quarterfinals kicked off on Tuesday night as 11 more acts performed. They battled, hoping for Simon Cowell to pick them as his Golden Buzzer, sending that act to the finals. or one of America’s picks to go to the semifinals. The night started off with a bang, but then slowed down, before picking back up for a satisfying yet surprising golden buzzer pick, aerial act, Sebastian & Sonia. (Read our Recap)
But there was a twist as their video package revealed that Sonia had been injured during rehearsal. She sustained a small fracture in her elbow. But with three days left to rehearse Sebastian put together a routine for himself to perform. The two hoped she could return for their possible next performance.
The duo met in a dance class in Barcelona. Sonia had a fear of heights, but Sebastian gave her confidence. The couple dreams of having a show in America. Their thrilling audition wowed the judges.
On stage, Sebastian performed an aerial act to Shawn Mendes’ “In My Blood.” It lacked the tosses that were so thrilling in the duo’s audition, but the act was still compelling. Additionally, the choreography was impressive, capping off the routine with crowd-pleasing super fast twirling. It’s not the best aerial act I’ve seen, but it’s still one of the better acts of the night. At the time of the performance, Sebastian’s act was by far the strongest since Brent Street’s opening performance.
Simon awards Sebastian & Sonia his Golden Buzzer: “That is the definition of courage”
The judges applauded Sebastian and gave him a standing ovation as Sonia joined him on stage for the judges’ commentary. Simon said, “I’m on my feet because a lot of people would have given up.” Referring to the audience, he called it “by far the best reaction we’ve had so far.” And then he pressed the Golden Buzzer. He joined both Sebastian and Sonia on the stage as they celebrated. Host Terry Crews asked the two how they felt. Sebastian said, “Right now we’re feeling that everything worked” before revealing he put the act together in three days. Sonia was at a loss for words. Simon added, “that is the definition of courage.” Sonia assured Simon she would be okay for the finals. It does buy them an extra week of time, but still, she will need to recover quickly as the finals are in two weeks.
Other than Sebastian’s fantastic performance, another worthy Golden Buzzer pick would have been Australian dance crew and Howie Mandel’s audition Golden Buzzer, Brent Street. The group opened the show effectively using tables as props. Solange Kardinaly’s quick change act was also entertaining and felt like the perfect Vegas act, which is what the show is all about. My honorable mention would go to Heidi Klum’s audition Golden Buzzer act, 10 year-old Pranysqa Mishra due to her vocal potential, even if her performance wasn’t flawless.
