She must have been inspired by David Letterman’s recent announcement that he would retire. Today, Barbara Walters announced on The View that her last day on the show would be May 16.
ABC will air a two-hour special highlighting her life and career that night, from 9-11 p.m. ET. Walters will continue to executive produce The View, and will be a “lifelong member of ABC News”, contributing as news warrants, according to an ABC statement.
Walters, 84, announced her retirement from television last year, but announced the specific date of her last broadcast this morning.
The veteran newscaster has been on the air for more than 50 years! Watch her emotional announcement below. The ABC news headquarters will be renamed “The Barbara Walters Building.”
