The Voice alum Jacquie Lee has dropped her latest single, “WYCMF,” via an unusual benefactor.
At only 17 years old Jacquie finished The Voice season 5 in second place as part of Team Christina Aguilera. After the season wrapped up in 2013, major record label Atlantic, signed her. The singer released her debut EP The Broken Ones in 2014. But after the set failed to gain traction on the charts, she and the label parted ways.
Afterward, Jacquie released a series of independent songs. including “Am I the Only One” in 2017, telling Galore magazine, that she finally had control of her own sound.
But now, the singer has an unusual musical partner funding and distributing her music. Cash App, the mobile payment service launched Cash App Studios in 2019 and signed on a bunch of artists, including Jacquie. Interestingly, through the deals, the company claims that any artist working with Cash App will retain ownership of their work and won’t have to pay back the cash.
Jacquie recalls a decade of being dropped, broke and swindled
Jacquie gushed over Cash App on Instagram. “After a decade of being signed, being dropped Being broke, being swindled and a whole bunch of other s— so far – a SoundCloud link of demos randomly fell into the hands of @cashapp studios and I’ve never experienced anything like what they’re doing for artists.”
The singer continued, “They’re really out here supporting projects and making it possible to own 100% independently – I’ve felt like the sky was falling since I was 15 but I’ve always held onto hope and it feels like s—- finally paying off. Super excited and grateful to be releasing my first ep with them…The universe really did come through with abundance and it’s only the beginning.”
