Britain’s Got Talent 2016 crowned 25-year-old magician Richard Jones last night. The active soldier is the first magician ever to win the final, beating out second place singer Wayne Woodward for the win.
Richard’s final act pulled on the heartstrings with patriotic card tricks. He spun a narrative as he performed tricks around a World War II prisoner of war, Fergus Anckorn, who performed card tricks in the camps to entertain his fellow prisoners, but also to earn extra food from the prison guards for himself and his friends. At the end of the act, he brought out the former soldier, now 97 years old, to meet the audience. A magic trick that also made people cry.
Hosts Ant and Dec shook the man’s hand while the judges, Amanda Holden, David Walliams, Alesha Dixon and Simon Cowell stood and saluted. Richard wins a spot at this year’s Royal Variety Performance as well as £250,000.
