American Idol’s Caleb Lee Hutchinson releases raw and emotional break up song, “I Miss You”
Caleb Lee Hutchinson drops an honest and raw new song from his upcoming album Southern Galactic due out on October 27. The track, titled “I Miss You” is about having a difficult time moving on from a broken relationship.
“’I Miss You,’ the saddest song on my upcoming record Southern Galactic, is out NOW!” Caleb writes on Instagram. “This album is full of happy moments, sad moments, existential moments, and just kinda dumb moments haha.” Caleb wrote the song himself, without co-writers.
The American Idol season 16 runner-up continues, sharing why he released such a personal song, “It’s all an honest-as-I-can-be picture of my experience and experiences we all go through. Heartbreak and loss are parts of being alive that we all have to go through in some degree. Writing this song was something that was well needed at the time.”
Caleb hopes the song’s message resonates with his fans. “My hope is, that anyone going through anything can listen and know that they’re not alone in how they feel. That nothing is wrong with how they feel. It’s all part of it.”
“Things get better, things work out, it’s all a pleasure to experience, the highs and the lows,” Caleb writes. “With love and gratitude, I hope you enjoy “I Miss You” as well as the rest of the songs coming to you 10/27 on Southern Galactic. Peace and Love to all y’all.”
Is ‘I Miss You’ about ex-girlfriend Maddie Poppe? Caleb drops a hint
Some fans are probably asking if the song is about his ex-girlfriend, Maddie Poppe. The two began dating during their season of American Idol in 2018. She won, while Caleb came in 2nd place. They dated until the fall of 2022. Currently, Maddie is in a new relationship with Gabe Burdulis, who is a Nashville based singer-songwriter and guitarist.
Maybe Caleb answers the question. A few days before releasing “I Miss You,” the singer dropped a teaser on Instagram. In the video, he sings the song to a toy frog. Remember that the “Rainbow Connection” by the Muppets was her signature song on American Idol and she dueted with Kermit the Frog on the finale.
The song lyrics go “I still miss you, and that’s the issue, after all the things we been through.”
Caleb reveals depression led to therapy, which allowed him to make “the best music I think I’ve ever made”
In another Instagram post, Caleb describes a difficult few years via a humorous meme. Caleb shares that the COVID pandemic left him in a “crippling depressive state” adding that he was “forced to wrestle some demons.” Eventually, Caleb went to therapy. He says, “In therapy, I became the best version of myself and it allowed me to make the best music that I think I’ve ever made.” He concludes, “I’m in a place and making music that I wouldn’t have thought possible just a year ago.”
