NBC is going in a different direction for its New Years Eve special. This year, Saturday Night Live executive producer, Lorne Michaels will helm an “all star celebration” hosted by former The Voice coach and pop star Miley Cyrus and SNL’s Pete Davidson.
The special will air live on NBC from Miami, Florida on Friday, December 31 from 10:30pm-12:30amET, and will also be live-streamed on Peacock.
“In what is sure to be an exciting and fun evening, we are looking forward to partnering with Lorne Michaels and ringing in 2022 with a night of incredible entertainment, led by Miley and Pete.” Said Jen Neal, Executive Vice President, Live Events, Specials and E! News, NBCUniversal.
Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party Hosted By Miley Cyrus and Pete Davidson is executive produced by Lorne Michaels, Miley Cyrus and Lindsay Shookus. It is produced by Den of Thieves with Executive Producers Jesse Ignjatovic, Evan Prager and Barb Bialkowski. It is also produced by Hopetown Entertainment, Miley Cyrus’ and Tish Cyrus’s production company. It is directed by Joe DeMaio.
The SNL produced show marks the end of The Voice coach Carson Daly’s reign as NBC’s New Year’s Eve host after 16 seasons. He had hosted since 2004, except for 2017-2018, when there was no special. Last year, Carson hosted NBC’s New Year’s Eve special live from Times Square with Amber Ruffin and Stephen “tWitch” Boss.
Typically, The Voice coaches such as Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani would round out the guest list. Maybe they still will. But it appears that NBC is trying to make a serious run at ABC’s veteran New Years Rockin’ Eve extravaganza hosted by Ryan Seacrest. With Michaels at the helm, NBC is probably trying to attract a bunch of A list talent.
