Lyndsey Parker of Yahoo Music interviewed Idol runner-up Crystal Bowersox, at Idol tour rehearsals a few days ago. After the jump, watch the video. Lee talks about the upcoming tour and album.
With Crystal, it was always more about musicianship–she frequently spoke fondly of her bandmates and jam sessions back home, and in an “Idol” first for contestants of either gender, her lovely original composition “Holy Toledo” was played on an “Idol” episode (as the background music during her homecoming footage). That had never happened on “American Idol” before, and it was refreshing to see the show supporting a contestant’s original music so enthusiastically and so early on. Post-show, that bodes well for how Crystal’s album will turn out now that she’s signed to 19/Jive Recordings, and how much creative control she will be given in the studio and in songwriting sessions.
Crystal feels she was misread throughout the competition. What appeared to be indifference was just her tendency to hold her feelings inside. She’s been playing music since she was 10. She confirms that she’ll possibly sing “Holy Toledo” when the tour plays her hometown, but wouldn’t spill her tour set.
On her album, Crystal says she doesn’t want to be pigeonholed, and expects to have many different influences on her record. And, her guitar player from back home, Frankie May, is coming with her!
