Daniel Sunjata is joining the Season 2 cast of Smash as a love interest for Julia, (Debra Messing), according to Entertainment Weekly.
The actor was a regular on the FX series Rescue Me, guest starred on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy last year and was also in this summer’s Dark Knight Rises.
Other additions to the Smash Season 2 cast include Krysta Rodriguez set to play Ana, Karen’s (Katharine McPhee) “fun and spunky new roommate.”
Also joining the NBC musical drama when it returns next season is Jennifer Hudson, who will play a Broadway diva in a multi-episode arc, plus Broadway actor, Andy Mientus and Newsies alum, Jeremy Jordan.
Leslie Odom Jr. who plays Sam the baseball loving dancer and boyfriend of Tom (Christian Borle) will be come a series regular
The new cast additions come in the wake of a shake up that resulted in the hire of a new show runner, Gossip Girl’s Josh Safran, to replace Broadway vet Theresa Rebeck and a purge of unpopular characters–including Karen’s boyfriend Dev (Raza Jaffrey), Julia’s soon-to-be-ex husband (Brian d’Arcy James) , and Tom’s evil assistant (Jaime Cepero).
Smash is set to return at mid-season, but the cast is already hard at work filming new episodes. Check out this new fall promo from NBC that includes a short clip of Jennifer Hudson, who had been spotted around New York City earlier this summer shooting scenes.
