Dexter Roberts is currently competing on The Voice season 13, But it’s not his first go-round with singing shows. Back in 2012, he was a finalist on American Idol. As a seventh place finisher, he made the American Idol Live summer tour, but had to drop out due to deer tick disease.
On last night’s (May 7) The Voice results show, the country crooner advanced to the Top 8 along with four of his Team Blake members. But after the Top 13 performances on Monday he admitted to Hollywood Life that although both shows have been great learning experience, he prefers his time on The Voice over American Idol.
“I love this experience [The Voice] more than what I got from Idol because they work with you so much here. The vocal team, the band is like 100 percent your band. You walk in and they are like 100 percent your garage band. They want us all to think that. It’s a really cool experience. It has really been a good time with The Voice.”
As far as coaches are concerned, Blake Shelton has always been his man. He was determined to choose him if the coach turned his chair. His second choice? Fellow American Idol alum Kelly Clarkson!
I have always looked up to Blake and he does the same kind of stuff as me. He loves to hunt and he loves to fish and be outdoors. If he didn’t pick me, then I would have gone with Kelly [Clarkson], but when Blake turned around it was obvious for me that I was going to go with him.
The Voice crowns its champion on May 22. If Dexter doesn’t win, he’s got a plan:
I am going to go out there and I am going to hit the ground running. I am going to keep going and not let anything hold me back. I will keep going forward and I think everyone here should do the same thing. I think it would be cool if we all got together and had a big country tour.
The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 PM ET on NBC.
