A member of Team Kelly Clarkson who was eliminated from The Voice penned a controversial post on Instagram, accusing Kelly of using gay stereotypes to define her.
On Monday night’s The Voice Battle Rounds (March 26) Kelly pitted Justin Gilgore vs Molly Stevens in a battle performance. After the duo sang Cam’s “Burning House,” Kelly chose Justin and eliminated Molly. The singer seemed to be in good spirits post elimination–she’s currently visiting New York City with her family. But in a since deleted Instagram post, the openly gay artist expressed disappointment that Kelly compared her to fellow gay artists, Melissa Etheridge and Indigo Girls.

“While I’m extremely honored to be in that category of talent, I do believe that comment did us all a disservice and only us into a labeling trap,” wrote Molly, “It felt small minded to me and exactly what I feel we need to bring attention to the world. “I don’t think Kelly Clarkson meant ANYTHING by this and even gave it any thought but clearly I did. I guess I’m just thinking in my head that I am a singer songwriter who happens to be gay…”
After a fan angrily pointed out the post to Kelly, she responded on Twitter, “Wow. This really bums me out. I need everyone 2 hear me & hear ALL OF THE WORDS I SAY. I compared Molly to Melissa Etheridge, Patty Griffin (a name that was left out conveniently), & the Indigo Girls purely because of the rasp in her voice & that she’s an amazing storyteller.”

.@mollystevens_1 I think you need to apologize to @kelly_clarkson . She has Always supported the gay community. As a fan & a gay man I am offended! Sounds like a bit of a sore loser way to go about things!! @NBCTheVoice @AtlanticRecords @GMA @CNN @billboard @MTVNews @TODAYshow pic.twitter.com/BQioGj087J

Shortly after Kelly posted her response, Molly deleted her post. Using the phrase “small minded” in reference to Kelly Clarkson got the response you’d expect from her fans. Folks pointed out to Molly that Kelly has always championed LGBT causes and has many gay fans. Here are Molly’s full remarks:
UPDATE: Molly apologizes on Twitter
I sincerely apologize for any hurt I may have caused with my words. This was not my intention at all. For the people who know me well, you know my heart well too. I strive to live in truth and light. @kelly_clarkson I truly apologize for thinking differently. I look up to you.
