Fritz Hager is teasing a new song for fans. On the heels of releasing his single, “Caroline,” the American Idol season 20 alum dropped a clip of a new tune.
He doesn’t reveal the name, but the lyrics go: “You could be my heartbreak, I’d love to talk but I’m a snowflake baby, I bet they call you aphrodite, oh it’s too early but I might be falling in love.”
In comments, Fritz asks his fans, ‘Should I release it? Let me know!”
While “Caroline” has a retro power-pop sound, the new song is more contemporary sounding, like something Harry Styles would drop. Check it out below.
Of course, his fans want him to release it. But will it be a major weeks long endeavor like the release of “Caroline?” After Fritz finished in the American Idol 2022 Top 5, American Idol signed him to their record label, 19 Recordings.
Will the “faceless old white dudes” get in the way of new music?
But after teasing “Caroline,” written by Fritz and American Idol 18 alum Francisco Martin, the singer-songwriter begged fans for weeks to pre-save the song, claiming that a bunch of “faceless old white dudes in suits” refused to release the upbeat, poppy tune until it racked up 15K in pre-saves. He further stated that the “suits” told him he wasn’t “good enough” and a “risky investment.”
The quest to release “Caroline” turned into a weeks long saga for Fritz. He even promised his fans they could pick out a tattoo for him–a guy who wasn’t all that into body art! The song FINALLY got a release date and came out on Jan 12, with a cute music video out a few weeks later.
In the almost 30 days since “Caroline” has come out, the song has amassed 140,163 plays on Spotify. Not bad. But not earth shattering either. What are the suits thinking now? Are they ready to allow Fritz to release more new music without thousands of pre-saves banked first?
By comparison “All My Friends,” an original song Fritz performed on American Idol, has amassed 493,296 Spotify plays. His official American Idol single, “Hearts Align” has 366,642. It’s worth noting those songs were released last spring and have had time to accrue spins.
