Glee Season 6 Spoilers Episode 7 “Transitioning” features a Transgender Storyline Involving a Major Character
The news and gossip site Eonline is teasing a TV show “spoiler bomb.” regarding one of the female characters of a “fan favorite show” transitioning from female to male. The storyline will be “very emotional,” reveals E, but will be “handled delicately and respectfully, per insiders.”
Well, I can confirm that the character is Coach Bieste from Glee, played by Dot-Marie Jones. Fans who follows the show, currently in production for its 6th and final season, set to premiere midseason on FOX, have seen the clues, posted all over social media.
The story arc begins in episode 3 titled Jagged Little Tapestry, when Coach Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) reveals the reason for missed football practices to Sam (Chord Overstreet) and Sue (Jane Lynch). Coach is in the midst of the difficult and emotional process of transitioning.

I don’t have details for Episode 7, which is currently being shot. But, clues indicate that the episode is where Beist’s trans story arc comes to a head.
The episode title appears to be “Transitioning,” per this photo from the Facebook page of Jenny Taylor, a transgender actress who has been filming scenes on the set of the show. “Can I even begin to share with you how awesome GLEE is in supporting transgender people? Amazing folks,” she wrote. Taylor added on another post, “GLEE is super thrilled to have transgender people on set. The casting director told us that she thinks this will be the best shoot ever. They are so happy to be using transgender people on the show. Times are certainly changing.”
A big location shoot this week involved a transgender choir (there were casting notices advertising for trans singers for an all-trans choir a few weeks ago) with actor, Alex Newell singing lead. You may remember him from seasons 3, 4 and 5 as the transgender high school student “Unique”. Reportedly, Alex performs the song “I Know Where I’ve Been” from the Broadway musical Hairspray, with the choir. He’s performed the emotional tune previously with the Boston Gay Men’s Choir and others.
From Jenny Taylor’s twitter:
About to be on set. Over 200 trans people here.

Glee actress, Lea Michele, who plays Rachel, tweeted a series of photos, hinting at the emotional and important nature of the scenes the cast has been shooting this week.
