On the 6th month anniversary of the untimely death of Glee star, Cory Monteith, from a fatal mixture of alcohol and heroin, comes a leaked version of “Seasons of Love.”
The Broadway tune, from the musical Rent, was initially slated to be performed during the Season 3 finale, “Graduation.” In that episode, the McKinley high seniors were picking up their diplomas and saying goodbye to each other. Cory’s character Finn was off to the army, while Rachel (Lea Michele) headed to New York City after fiance Finn broke it off with her.
“Seasons of Love” would have been a fitting goodbye for Finn, Rachel, Kurt, Santana, Mercedes, Quinn, Mike and Puck, but for unknown reasons, the song was cut from the performance-crammed episode, and was also not included on the Glee Graduation album.
Fast-forward 2 years later, and “Seasons of Love” is re-recorded. This time it makes the cut, as a moving eulogy that opens “The Quarterback,” the episode that paid tribute to the passing of Cory and Finn. And it was a fitting and emotional goodbye.
Cory’s solo on the Season 3 version, “In bridges he burned, or the way that she died,” seems eerily prophetic. It’s a tough listen. Reading through Tumblr posts, fans are just happy to hear Cory’s voice on something new–a gift to assuage their grief.
Listen to the full version below.
Rest in peace, Cory.
