With 55.94% of reports in, [Insert Adele Macro]. Adele will top the chart for her 18th weeks and has her sights set on Whitney’s Bodyguard Soundtrack which spent 20 weeks on the top of the charts. This album has amazing legs.
The top new debut arrives at number 2 and has a bit of an interesting history. If you think that you haven’t seen a new album of music from Tim McGraw for a while, you are right. Tim has been in a protracted battle with his label Curb for many years. Curb kept releasing “Tim McGraw Greatest Hits” albums in order to keep him under contract. He submitted this album to Curb back in 2010 and they took him to court. They said that the album had been submitted too soon after his previous album and it wasn’t up to snuff. Despite that claim, they bundled one of those submitted songs onto a Greatest Hits Album and got a number one country hit out of the single. So much for being crap. The judges sided with Tim and freed him from his Curb contract, so Curb rushed out this album. Tim is not promoting it. Label intrigue indeed.
The Grammy’s released their compilation album and it is currently in third. Each year, they feature songs from Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year and Best New Artist, plus two other revolving categories. This year, they are featuring Best Country Album and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Included are Maroon 5’s “Move Like Jagger” (featuring Voice judges Adam and Christina), “Honey Bee” (featuring Voice judge Blake Shelton) and “Don’t You Wanna Stay” (featuring Idol Kelly Clarkson).
A debut from Ingrid Michaelson is 4th, Kidz Bop 21 is 5th, Lamb of God debuts at 6th, Luke Bryan is at 8th, the much despised, yet still able to sell a lot, Nickelback is at 9th and Drake is 10th.
The top Idol this week is Kellie Pickler. Her new album “100 Proof” is debuting at 7th. Like many female artists on country lately, her single struggled on the charts and she currently does not have one on the country chart. It will be interesting to see if the label can come out with a workable strategy to support this album.
Kelly is up next with a trio of albums. Her solo album is at 20th, her song “Mr. Know It All” is a track on Now 41 at 15th, and she has a high-profile duet on Jason Aldean’s album at 18th. Scotty McCreery is currently sitting in 22nd and Daughtry is at 27th. Maroon 5, featuring Voice judge Adam Levine, is 38th
