With 69.42% of reports in, Lee DeWyze is about to loose one of his records – one he probably doesn’t mind losing. For the last 3 years, he has held the record for the lowest album debut week sales of any American Idol finalist – 39K units moved. Jessica Sanchez has him easily beat with her 15-17K in sales. Needless to say, she is also snatching Diana Degarmo’s crown of lowest selling runner-up whose “Blue Skies” sold 47K way back in Season 3.
I don’t really blame Jess. This album release has been rather low-key. One appearance on Idol, a single not going for adds until a week after album debut, very little promo – one might almost say that Interscope is keeping her their little secret – and an album out almost a year after her season…one has to wonder what Jimmie was thinking and what the future for whoever wins this season will be. Jimmie hasn’t had an incredible track record of breaking female singers on this show. He does do well with the WGWG, though.
A guy who knows how to break female Idols? I hate to say this, but the crypt-keeper himself, Clive Davis. And, look, there is Fantasia in her second week in the number 4 position. Not shabby at all. In fact, very good. Of course, I could point to a lot of his flops (Kat McPhee, anybody?) and Fantasia has worked hard for her continued success (and Clive is long out of the picture).
Okay, onto the rundown. Kenny Chesney is set to have his 7th number one album this week. The dude is a machine. He releases an album every year – 9 albums since 2004. Michael Buble who was number one last week, will be number two this week. Justin Timberlake is the new Adele as he refuses to give up his slot in the top 3. Fantasia, as previously mentioned, is 4th. Voice Judge Blake Shelton is 5th, Randy Rogers Band is 6th, Macklemore and Lewis are 7th, FOB 8th, P!nk (getting covered three times in two weeks on Idol) is 9th and Florida Georgia Line makes it 4 Country acts in the top 10.
Jessica is currently debuting way down in 18th with a predicted 15-17K in sales (about double what the best-selling winner of the Voice sold and in line with what the best-selling winner of US XF sold – BTW Tate is off the chart in his third week). Carrie is 42nd, Phil is 44th and Kelly Clarkson clings to the bottom of the chart at 50th (Idols better release some new albums or I’m going to run out of things to report). Now 45 features 1D, Kelly and Phil and is currently at 36th.
This week is Mother’s Day so expect a surge in sales for albums that might appeal to Mom.
