‘American Idol’ exclusive: Brooke White, Justin Gaston to perform duet on this Wednesday’s results show

American Idol season 7 finalist Brooke White and Justin Gaston, current star of the If I Can Dream web series, will perform together on this Wednesday’s Idol telecast, EW has learned exclusively. No word yet on what White and Gaston will sing, but the duet (shown rehearsing in the IICD studio on Sunday) is in keeping with Idol’s recent trend of showcasing its alumni during results shows, and of synergy between Idol and If I Can Dream, which were both created by Simon Fuller. (IICD recently added Alex Lambert, who was shockingly booted during Idol’s current season semifinals, to its roster of struggling young artists.)

Brooke White and Justin Gaston to duet on Wednesday’s ‘Idol’

In keeping with season 9’s tradition of “American Idol” alumni performing on results night, Wednesday’s show will not only feature last year’s runner-up Adam Lambert, but season 7’s fifth-place finisher, Brooke White, will make an appearance, dueting with “If I Can Dream” star Justin Gaston.

We got to see a bit of their rehearsal on Sunday afternoon as “Idol” musical director Ricky Minor popped in to check up on the two, who’ll be singing the title to Justin’s show, Elvis Presley’s “If I Can Dream.”

Jason Castro Opens Up About His Surprise Weddings

Jason Castro is truthfully one of my favorite American Idol contestants ever. His easy, breezy pop sound was a breath of fresh air on season 7 (where he was the fourth-place finalist) and I was thrilled to find out last year that he had inked a deal with Atlantic Records.

Even more thrilling? The singer’s surprise marriage to longtime girlfriend, Mandy Mayhall, 22, where he played some tunes just like he did at the recent Bachelor wedding of Jason and Molly! I caught up with the Texas native, 23 — who just announced his first headling tour! — last Tuesday and got the skinny on his big dates.

Adam Lambert goes Top 10 at Hot AC

Adam Lambert’s Whataya Want From Me, the top song on this week’s Mediabase-powered American Idol airplay chart, moves into the top 10 at the Hot AC format. It looks like a top 10 Top 40 hit may elude Adam, however — while Whataya Want From Me stays steady on USA TODAY’s Top 40 chart at No. 13, it loses several spins.

Is Fourth the New First?

As you see, only our two favorite slots have an average approval rating under the average of 50, and both are well below it. In fact, taking both the Semifinals and Finals into account, the average rating for the #4 slot has plummeted in the past two seasons. Since the middle of 2008, there have been no 5-star performances out of the four-hole on American Idol. The best rating anyone has managed there: 70, done once by David Archuleta and once by Allison Iraheta.

Another ‘Idol’ singer has ties to the Cape

SANDWICH — Siobhan Magnus isn’t the only “American Idol” contestant with ties to Cape Cod.

Tom Donahue, 63, of Sandwich is glued to his television set every Tuesday and Wednesday night to watch “Idol.” But while Siobhan mania has gripped the peninsula and every set of eyes on the Cape is focused on the 20-year-old Marstons Mills phenom, Donahue is nervously cheering on his nephew, Lee DeWyze.

DeWyze, the 24-year-old Chicago native who has impressed judges and fans with his raspy voice but struggled at times with his confidence, has never set foot on the Cape. But Donahue said he visits his nephew and the rest of his sister’s family a couple of times a year, and has called DeWyze in Hollywood at least once a week since the start of the competition.

Idol welcomes back Adam Lambert

Adam Lambert may strike some Idolators as an offbeat choice to mentor an occasionally – and some might say increasingly – out-of-tune and off-key final nine contestants on American Idol this week.

No one, though, short of Kris Allen, has more recent experience of – and appreciation for – what it really takes to make it to the end of TV’s most-watched, if not always talked-about, talent competitions.

Leona Lewis And Jennifer Hudson Record Duet

The pair’s song could be chosen as the theme tune for the latest big screen adaptation of the hit American TV show. SATC2 is due to be released worldwide in May and will see the four main characters – Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, Samantha Jones and Charlotte York-Goldenblatt – taking a holiday in Morocco. However, the plot remains a closely-guarded secret.

“The pair have recorded the song and it’s being discussed as either the main theme or to feature on the soundtrack. They each have incredible voices and will appeal to both the UK and the US, ” a source told British newspaper The Sun. “It’s perfect for the next SATC film.”

Hicks finds niche with ‘Grease’

It’s been four years since Taylor Hicks, the ebullient, prematurely-grey purveyor of retro blues-rock, broke the law on American Idol by showing up on camera playing harmonica.

Despite the no-instruments rule on the show back then, the guy with a fandom known as the Soul Patrol found a way to let the world see his musicianship as well as hear his voice.

“I like to think I broke the ice, ” says Hicks, from the Toronto stop of his ongoing role as Teen Angel in the touring production of Grease.

‘American Idol’ Judge Slips Away for Her Own Star Turn

In other words, even as Ms. DioGuardi is finding her footing, she’s still on uncertain ground. So over the weekend at the Music Box at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa here, she took what amounted to a low-profile getaway from the most popular show on television for a pair of cabaretlike concerts that were billed as her solo performing debuts. It was a safe space: many devoted fans, an out-of-the-way city and a conceit — “an evening of songs and stories” — that allowed Ms. DioGuardi to put her personality to work alongside her voice.

There was no need to hedge: Ms. DioGuardi is an impressive, sometimes phenomenal singer, versatile enough to slip easily among rock, blues, country and R&B.

Kara DioGuardi: Simon and I Get Along Splendidly

It’s been two years since Kara DioGuardi joined American Idol as the fourth judge, yet viewers still question her position at the judging table.

“A lot of people still ask, ‘Who is that girl sitting next to Ellen and Simon?, ’” she told a sold-out crowd at the Borgata Music Box in Atlantic City, where she performed the first of two concerts on Friday night. “I wanted to get out there and show a different side of me and show I do know what I am talking about.”

Dancing’s Chelsie Hightower: Jake and I Aren’t That Dramatic

After two weeks of tense video packages featuring her and partner Jake Pavelka, Chelsie Hightower wants to set the record straight. “We have a lot of fun together. We goof off, but they haven’t shown that yet in our packages, ” the Dancing with the Stars pro tells TVGuide.com. “It’s not that dramatic. We have a few moments like every couple does, and that’s what they end up showing. What can you do? When Zap2it caught up with “So You Think You Can Dance” creator Nigel Lythgoe at the College TV Awards in Hollywood, he shared his brand-new strategy for getting the contestants to reach their full potential. They’re taking a “sort of psychological” approach to the competition this time.

“We believe that everybody’s got a firefly inside them, ” Lythgoe says, snapping his fingers. “A lot of people just don’t light it up. They don’t know how to light it up.” This year, Nigel is hoping to boost the charisma of his dancers.

But at a Glee event Saturday at the Grove in Los Angeles, Lynch, 49, told UsMagazine.com the reports are correct.

‘Glee’ a Musical Success as Much as a Cult Success

LOS ANGELES — ‘Glee, ’ the award-winning musical comedy about a misfit high school show choir, might be doing more for music than its fellow Fox juggernaut, ‘American Idol.’

In its first 13 episodes, the show treated viewers to covers of songs by Neil Diamond, Rihanna, Kanye West, Barbra Streisand, Beyonce, Queen, Liza Minnelli and more. The music from ‘Glee’ is a huge success in its own right, with more than 4 million digital downloads sold and two soundtracks already certified gold. A nationwide tour, “Glee Live, ” featuring key members from the show’s cast, kicks off in May and has sold out, and the show is boosting sales for the original artists behind the songs.

We Predict the Timeline of the Inevitable Glee Backlash

While FlashForward and V crumbled after long breaks in the middle of their seasons, Glee has actually seen its profile rise after four months away. And with recent cast performances at the White House and on The Oprah Winfrey Show — not to mention tickets for the sold-out live shows at Radio City Music Hall running upwards of $1, 900 on StubHub — it’s safe to say the Fox hit is going into tomorrow night’s return as a phenomenon. Unfortunately, judging from past TV-hit history, that can mean only one thing: The backlash is just around the corner. Here’s how we predict the fans will turn.
