Idoloonies: Jacob Gets Booted, James Gets a Pass, Lauren Gets a Rewrite, Haley Gets Squat

American Idol is a harsh, frustrating, and inconsistent mistress, but to paraphrase one of the ditties covered during Top 5 week, I can’t live…if livin’ is without Fox’s ubiquitous ratings behemoth. Yes, folks, Season 10 has been filled with maddening moments, like the judges conveniently overlooking James Durbin’s pitch problems on “Closer to the Edge, ” or the producers rewriting Idol history to create an “underdog rising” story arc for Lauren Alaina, or Haley Reinhart never getting the respect that she’s entitled to.

How The Voice Found Its Singers

America’s got talent, but not everyone is lining up to audition for TV’s growing number of singing competition shows. That’s where Michelle McNulty, the casting director for NBC’s new hit series The Voice, comes in. McNulty and her team spent months tracking down performers in clubs, at rehearsal studios, on YouTube and via personal contacts in order to find the right contestants.

TV critics have been impressed with the caliber of talent on The Voice, particularly in the premiere episode — and credit much of the show’s early success to those performances. “We were looking for singers that might not audition for American Idol or any of those other competition shows, ” McNulty says. “We were looking for real artists.”

‘Glee’: Mike O’Malley on prom, pilots and practical advice

On Tuesday (May 10), we grabbed “Glee’s” Mike O’Malley (aka Burt Hummel) when he stopped by the KTLA Morning Show. We asked him about the upcoming “Prom Queen” episode, his comedy pilot — “Family Album” — and stood by helplessly when the interview was crashed by “Parenthood’s Dax Shepard.

O’Malley told us he hopes Burt Hummel will eventually get to sing on “Glee.” Citing Artie’s out-of-the-wheelchair dream sequence “Safety Dance, ” he didn’t see why a similar scenario couldn’t be concocted for Burt.

He also had blunt advice for would-be prom-goers: “It’s really just a party where everybody’s dressed up. It’s really just a dance … I think that if people look at it that way they won’t be disappointed when it turns out to be just another dance in a fancy costume.”

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did you hear about the competition?
One of my friends actually sent me a message on Facebook the day before, or a couple days before, for an open audition. I wasn’t gonna do it, I really wasn’t gonna do it. I really didn’t want to get involved in a competition. I’m not that type of person, but I went to the audition and they really enjoyed my performance, which got me excited and then finally when I heard that they accepted me, I was just amazed. It made me feel really good.
