Where ‘Idol’ went wrong this season

Regardless of who wins the Crystal Bowersox-Lee Dewyze showdown on “American Idol” this week, season nine will still go down as the most frustrating season in the show’s history.

Despite some of the heat-of-the-moment criticism, this isn’t the worst year ever. Season six was probably the low point where it seemed like there might not be enough talent out there to sustain the franchise, while season three looks a lot better now that Jennifer Hudson has made it in Hollywood. I’d take this group over either of those two classes.

‘American Idol’ Talking Points: Boredom, Judging, And Selling Your Organs

Once again, I am joined by Stephen Thompson of NPR Music as we continue what is now a years-long discussion of American Idol in all its … well, “glory.” The final performance show is tonight; tomorrow night, they crown a winner.

Oh, but first, we have to talk a tiny bit about Dancing With The Stars.

Crystal Bowersox Will Win ‘American Idol, ‘ Howard Stern Predicts

For quite some time now, there have been rumblings that Howard Stern could replace Simon Cowell on “American Idol.” But does Stern even watch the show?

Well, as it turns out, he does, and he has a pretty good idea of who he thinks will win this season, as the final two go head-to-head Tuesday night (May 25).

“I watch it religiously. I believe Crystal Bowersox will win, ” he said at the NYC premiere of “Sex and the City 2.” “I don’t think the show has been great this season. That’s why their ratings have dropped a little bit. The judges have been a little soft. I think it’s time to mix it up, make it a little more exciting again, but what do I know?”

Lee DeWyze’s Hometown Supporters Confident He’ll Win ‘American Idol’

After boosting Crystal Bowersox for most of the season, Simon Cowell told fellow judge Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show Tuesday (May 25) that he’s feeling pretty bullish about Lee DeWyze’s prospects for winning “American Idol.”

That kind of thinking merely puts him in line with what most of DeWyze’s friends and admirers back in Mt. Prospect, Illinois, have been saying for weeks: Their man is going to bring home the first non-Southern “Idol” title in the show’s history Wednesday night.

Idol Meter: It’s Crystal’s or Lee’s contest to win, or lose

It’s the end of Season 9 and, more sadly, the end of the Simon Cowell era on American Idol. It remains to be seen — after Simon pulled all the strings at his disposal last week (a whole string section, in fact, plus a choir) to create a “moment” for Lee DeWyze — whether voters will grant him a Lee victory as a going-away present. Or will the best singer win?

‘American Idol’ Season Nine’s Top 10 Best Performances

The ninth season of “American Idol” has taken a wallop from critics and fans for lacking the water-cooler chatter and overall talent of previous seasons. Yet despite the negative buzz, there were still a handful of performances worth celebrating among all those “do not wants.”

So, as we gear up for Tuesday’s (May 25) final performance night, sit back and grab your brain’s TiVo remote as we quickly rewind season nine and revisit 10 of our favorite performances this year.

Crystal Needs To Be Our Next American Idol (And It’s Not About Her Voice)

If Simon Fuller, the creator of American Idol and the suit who signs the winners to his management company, believes that history repeats itself, he will be furiously texting Crystal Bowersox’s number Wednesday night instead of that of Lee DeWyze. This is because in the eight-year history of the show, when the last two finalists standing are a man and a woman, and the woman wins, she has gone on to great success. When she places second–not so much.

Building A Brand After American Idol

Tonight launches the two-day season finale of the ninth season of American Idol, and Justin Guarini knows exactly how nerve-wracking it can be. Guarini was declared the first runner-up to winner, Kelly Clarkson, in the show’s first season back in 2002. He told me he’s learned a lot from this life-changing experience, but the most important lesson was how to be an entrepreneur with the responsibility of managing his public image and brand.

The Southern Soul Of Bo Bice

One of the more striking changes in the music world the past few years is that fans aren’t afraid to like more than one genre. Bo Bice is well aware of this. The Alabama native sat down with LimeWire Music Blog recently to talk about his new album, 3, and one of the first questions asked was about his style, which encompasses southern rock, blues, and country. Is being versatile a blessing or a curse?

Simon Cowell heads to ‘Idol’ farewell

LOS ANGELES — He began as “Mr. Nasty, ” morphed into one of the most beloved (and richest) stars of U.S. pop culture, and ushered in a brutal style of reality TV.

Simon “I don’t mean to be rude, but..” Cowell bids farewell to “American Idol” next week, leaving a litany of stinging put-downs, an assortment of black and white T-shirts and big shoes to fill on what began in 2002 as a summer talent contest and became America’s most watched TV show.

‘DWTS’: Nicole & Derek Dish on Their Slip

Admit it — it was painful to watch as ‘Dancing with the Stars‘ front-runner Nicole Scherzinger and Derek Hough suffered a hiccup in the around-the-neck flip during their freestyle dance Monday night.

The entire pressroom gasped as it happened, and the look on Nicole’s face on-camera made our heart go out to her, but it didn’t sway the judges too much, as the pair still scored a 27, which was the highest out of the freestyle dances.

‘DWTS’ Finalist Evan Lysacek Is ‘Not Somebody I’ll Root For’: Johnny Weir

Cutthroat competition is a hallmark of Olympic figure skating. Who could forget that whole kneecap-whacking incident between Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan back in the mid-’90s? “I don’t [Lysacek should win]. I think Nicole is much better, ” Weir told MTV News Monday at the “Sex and the City 2” premiere in New York City. “Evan and I have kind of had a war of words over the past month or so, and he’s not somebody I’ll root for in anything. So, definitely no.”

Glee’s Harry Shum Jr. Finally Speaks (and Answers Your Questions!)

Harry Shum Jr. is many things to many people: the non-annoying dancer in iPod commercials; the star of the upcoming Step-Up 3D (his fourth dance movie); a trilingual wonder (he was born in Costa Rica, and speaks Spanish, Cantonese, and “English, pretty well”); the co-choreographer of the description-defying Legion of Extraordinary Dancers (he plays good guy Elliott Hoo in the LXD’s soon-to-be-released online dance film). But he’s now best known as Mike Chang, the mysteriously dialogue-less “Other Asian” on Glee. Until now! Shum will get his first audible line in tonight’s episode, “Theatricality.” He spoke to Vulture while on the road with the Glee tour about his dance talents, experience on the show, and finally breaking his silence.
