Duet partners make magic

It’s simple: A successful duet comes down to magic, says Gary Overton, chairman and CEO of Sony Music Nashville. And this summer, some of country’s biggest stars have cast their harmonizing spells on country radio.

No fewer than six duets have reigned on country airwaves over the past few months, and four of those — Brad Paisley with Alabama on “Old Alabama, ” Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood’s “Remind Me, ” Zac Brown Band and Jimmy Buffett’s “Knee Deep, ” and the Kenny Chesney/Grace Potter song “You and Tequila” — easily made it into the Top 10 on country airplay charts. Rascal Flatts recently released “Easy, ” a duet with English pop singer Natasha Bedingfield. Will Young smokes a ruminative Marlboro Light, stares at a hole in his jumper, and reflects on what might have been. What if the public had been on his side week after week? What if Simon Cowell, Pop Idol’s hanging-and-flogging judge, had given him the thumbs up rather than the bum’s rush? What if the promised corporate riches had come his way?
