Jennifer Hudson performed Aretha Franklin’s “Young, Gifted and Black” on Sunday night’s (June 28) BET Awards.
The American Idol alum and The Voice coach is starring as the Queen of Soul in the upcoming film, Respect, out later this year. Following the moving performance, backed up by a gospel choir, the network aired a new trailer for the film.
Jennifer Hudson Sings ‘Where Peaceful Waters Flow’ for Global Citizens
“We are Royalty!” Jennifer wrote on Instagram. “Oh what a lovely precious thing it is to be young gifted and black.”
While the song honors Aretha’s early gospel years, the song takes on new meaning today against a backdrop of Black Lives Matters protests.
Notable: Jennifer’s American Idol season 3 chum George Huff sings backups. So does The Voice 13 alum Davon Fleming, who competed on Team Jhud!
