The American Music Awards (AMAs) commemorated 50 years of performances and pop culture history with a two-hour broadcast Sunday night (Oct 6), American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special. The event aired concurrently on both coasts, 8:00-10:00 PM, ET/5:00-7:00 PM, PT on the CBS Television Network and streaming on Paramount+.
The special served as a tribute to the past 50 years and featured new performances, artist interviews, special guests and exclusive footage from DCP’s archives, highlighting iconic moments that have defined the awards show and shaped pop culture.
American Idol alum and daytime talk show host Jennifer Hudson channeled Whitney Houston during a tribute performance that included “I Will Always Love You,” “I Loves You, Porgy” and more songs. Additionally, Jennifer re-created one of the late singer’s iconic ensembles.

Jennifer Hudson channeled Whitney’s 1994 AMAs look
Jennifer hit the stage in a custom black La Roxx gown inspired by the look Whitney wore during her i1994 AMAs performance. The singer described her connection to Whitney Houston: “I think the gospel,” she said. “You know, the presence. A gift.” Jennifer continued, “It just touched me at an early age. I don’t think I can recall a time that I didn’t know of Whitney. Though I recall seeing her at a young age, just being completely captivated by this goddess, this voice that was like, from heaven or something. And it resonated with me at like seven years old.”
Whitney Houston passed away in 2012 at age 48.
