Continuing to mine the vein of his The Voice ugly duckling narrative, season 9 winner Jordan Smith releases his cover of Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful.” The song is from the singer’s forthcoming album, Something Beautiful, due out on March 18.
The song starts off quiet, so quiet I wondered if it would ever take off But then it does in a single soaring high note. And then it’s ad libs for everybody until the song ends as quietly as it began. Producer David Foster is doing a good job highlighting the aspects of Jordan’s voice that attracted so many fans on the show.
During the course of his inevitable march to The Voice win last fall, Jordan broke show records, selling over 1.2 million tracks and 50,000 units of his compilation CD Jordan Smith: The Complete Season 9 Collection.
But it remains to be seen if the Harlan, KY native can be a big seller post-The Voice. His first single from the set, “Stand in the Light,” sold 9,906 US downloads in it’s first week, charting at #133 on digital songs.
