Katharine McPhee and her husband David Foster dropped by Live with Kelly and Ryan on Thursday (June 2) to chat about their upcoming projects. But they also reminisced about meeting on American Idol in 2006. Later, Katharine performed “Something to Shout About” from David’s upcoming Broadway musical.
During the interview Katharine reminded Live co-host Ryan Seacrest that she and David met on American Idol. Co-host Kelly Ripa joked that Ryan is responsible for bringing the two together. Katharine recalled that David and Andrea Bocelli were guest mentors one week of the competition.
“We became friends, we worked together, he produced my first single,” Katharine added that their meeting was not random. David reminds everybody “That was 17 years ago!” Katharine came in second place behind Taylor Hicks on season 5 when the iconic series was nearly at its zenith in popularity. Over 30 million viewers watched David and Katharine meet for the first time.
Although they’ve only been married since 2019, they were friends for years, but were married or dating other people. “We kept it all on the up and up,” said David. “He was at my first wedding!” Katharine said. It’s true, David performed before the ceremony when Katharine married Nick Cokas in 2008. Katharine also revealed that she attended one of his four prior weddings.
Next up for the pair: The two are taking their “Kat and Dave” show on the road.
David explained that the act began on Instagram live during Covid. “We thought we just do some shows for fun and it ended up being really popular…this is sort of an extension of that.” The two are set to play the Cafe Carlyle in New York City. “I’m the piano player, she’s the singer,” David said. Katharine will sing songs from David’s catalog, plus a few Broadway numbers, in between patter and jokes.
Speaking of Broadway, David and Katharine are in town to present David’s Broadway musical about Betty Boop to investors. He’s been working on it for 14 years. “It’s definitely going to Broadway next year, for sure,” Katharine insisted.
