Season 5 American Idol finalist and Season 16 Dancing With The Stars champion Kellie Pickler has released a new single to country radio, now a charming uptempo track cowritten by her husband Kyle Jacobs with Tammi Lynn Hutton and Fred Wilhelm. When she performed it at Six Flags New England in Springfield, Massachusetts, she introduced it by talking about how her Minnesota-native hubby calls her his “lil gypsy redneck” (awww), and showed off her best Minnesota accent. Check out video of Kellie performing “Little Bit Gypsy” live:
“A Little Bit Gypsy” follows “Someone Somewhere Tonight,” which peaked at #49 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart and #48 on the Country Aircheck/Mediabase chart despite early callout that seemed to point to at leaset t30 level appeal (if not t20 based on the percentage of people who loved the song). On the other hand, “Someone Somewhere Tonight” was a slow ballad likely to struggle on country radio in the summer even if the country radio environment were friendlier to traditional country at this time. That’s where “A Little Bit Gypsy,” an upbeat song about a women who’s born for the road (whose studio version features handclaps and a few other concessions to contemporary country while still allowing Kellie to maintain her pure country phrasing), may stand a better chance.
“Little Bit Gypsy” goes for adds 8/19 according to All Access. What do you think of Kellie’s new single and how do you rate its odds of at least cracking the country t30?
