Kelly Clarkson teams up for an unlikely collaboration with Steve Martin on her new track ‘i hate love’
Kelly Clarkson has teamed up with banjo virtuoso Steve Martin on new song “i hate love” – the latest off her highly anticipated tenth studio album chemistry, arriving June 23rd and available for pre-order now via Atlantic Records.
The song arrives alongside a special live video taken from the American Idol OG winner’s one-night-only performance of chemistry last month at Los Angeles’ Belasco Theatre, directed/produced by Weiss Eubanks and Jonny Mars.
In an interview with Billboard, Kelly explains the line from the song: “I hate love, and The Notebook lied. It’s Complicated is more like what happens, so you can keep Gosling and I’ll take Steve Martin.”
“I feel like both exist,” the singer told Billboard of the plots from the 2004 Nicholas Sparks-based romance starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, and the 2009 Nancy Meyers rom-com, starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin–which she calls one of her “favorite movies.”
“One is the beginning, when everything is bright and shiny,” she told Billboard, “and It’s Complicated is more the reality.” It’s complicated involves a philandering ex-husband (Baldwin) and an architect (Martin) of whom Kelly says, “This is what you should be looking for and what you do deserve.”
It was Kelly’s idea to reach out to Steve Martin
It was Kelly’s idea to reach out to Martin, and with one email, he agreed to play banjo on the track. The singer hasn’t met the iconic comic yet, but she’s hoping he comes on The Kelly Clarkson Show when it returns in New York City this fall.
“i hate love” follows the release of upbeat single “favorite kind of high,” which received the remix treatment last week from internationally acclaimed DJ/producer David Guetta. Meanwhile double singles “mine” / “me” served as the first taste of the 14-track collection.
