Kelly Clarkson is Ready to Open Up About her Painful Divorce
Kelly Clarkson called into On Air with Ryan Seacrest to chat about her new album she’s nervous to release her post-divorce album, Chemistry. It also marks her first album in 6 years.
The album tells the story of her relationship with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock whom she divorced in 2020 after seven years of marriage. The couple share childrent River Rose and Remington Alexander.
Meanwhile, as the American Idol OG winner gears up to release new music and embark on a Las Vegas residency this summer, she performed a rendition of “abcdefu” by GAYLE on her afternoon talk show. The Voice coach changed the words to fit her personal and painful divorce situation!
“Forget you and your dad and the fact that you got half,” Kelly sings
“Forget you and your dad / And the fact that you got half / And my broken heart, turned that s–t into art,” she belted out. “Forget you and your friends / That I’ll never see again / Everybody but your dog / You can all get lost.”
The original lyrics go: original lyrics: “F–k you and your mom / And your sister and your job / And your broke-ass car, and that s–t you call art.”
The new lyrics appear to reference the drama surrounding the lawsuit from her former father-in-law Narvel Blackstock’s management company, and Kelly’s divorce settlement with her ex, whom she settled with for a one-time payment of over $1.3 million to in addition to monthly spousal and child support.
“I was maybe not going to release [the album] at all”
Kelly opened up to Ryan Seacrest about Chemistry, and how she feels about releasing the most personal album of her career since 2007’s My December, which lyrics also dealt with a past relationship.
“I was maybe not going to release [the album] at all,” Kelly told Ryan. “I went through so much and I wrote so much I was like, ‘What are we doing here?’ Am I doing this for therapy purposes, because I do that a lot of times, a lot of songs I’ve never released.
She finally feels that she’s on the other side of the pain. “I think at the time when you’re going through something, you can’t even see the end, although people tell you it’s there.” Kelly said. “I just couldn’t even realize. I couldn’t actualize me sitting here in an interview right now with you talking about it. I just didn’t know that day would be able to come.”
“It sounds very dramatic now that I say it out loud,” Kelly admitted. “It’s just so painful that you don’t know if you want to vocalize it or even go near it. But it’s been a few years almost now. And it turns out they were right. There is the other side.”
Kelly shares details on her “intimate” Las Vegas residency
As far as her Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood which kicks off on July 28, the singer says the show will be intimate and have a “storyteller vibe.” She wanted to keep the venue as small as possible. But, a she’s “got a lot of jobs” she needed to reach as many people as possible, but in a short amount of time.
Kelly promises that she’ll be singing all the fan-favorite hits. “I’m gonna totally play the songs that people want obviously,” she told Ryan. “I haven’t performed them in years. I’m excited about that, all the hits but also sprinkling the new stuff throughout those 10 dates and really just making it more–even the songs that, you know–maybe some of the stuff behind the songs. It’s just more of a low-key rock and roll vibe. It’s definitely not like your normal Las Vegas show.”
