Detroit native, Malaya Watson, was still in high school in 2012 when she sat down for an interview and a performance for the weekly web series, B in the City. In the interview, she revealed that she comes from a family of musicians, had been playing piano for 5 years, and singing since she “left the womb.” She also plays tuba, several percussion instruments and a little violin.
Malaya also REALLY loves Beyonce!
The singer’s Youtube channel includes covers from artists such as Chaka Khan, Ciara and Aretha Franklin, which Malaya has re-arranged to suit her jazzy, torchy singing style. Upbeat does not appear to be part of her repertoire, but she could surprise us once the American Idol competition begins in January.
