Whoo boy. Mariah Carey had a major lip sync malfunction LIVE on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest. The singer, and former American Idol judge was the night’s marquee talent, scheduled to sing just before the ball dropped.
As the music began for her first number “Emotion” there was sound, but Mariah’s mouth wasn’t moving. It appeared that her ear monitors were malfunctioning. She spent the rest of the song vamping with her background dancers, talking to the audience and asking them to sing along. Her trademark trills could be heard in the background. It was painful.
By the second song, “We Belong Together,” Mariah appeared to have recovered and was singing along with the track. Mariah, whose entire musical existence rests on her phenomenal voice, can’t sing live anymore. I’m surprised she puts herself into high profile live performance situations. It’s not the first embarrasing moment the singer has had on live TV.
Update: After her performance, Mariah reacted via Twitter:
Shit happens ? Have a happy and healthy new year everybody!? Here's to making more headlines in 2017 ? pic.twitter.com/0Td8se57jr
