Jordin Sparks & Elijah Blake Unpack Their Joint EP, and Why Brandy Remains An Underrated Influence – After a four-year hiatus, the ‘American Idol’ champ has joined forces with Blake on ‘1990 Forever,’ a new EP steeped in the traditions of vintage R&B. And yet, even on a bicoastal three-way call, the close friendship between the two stars is palpable. After meeting years ago in a writing session for another artist, Jordin and Elijah hit it off, bonding over their life experiences and what they love about music (“Our souls were in sync, is the only way I can put it,” says Sparks). Soon enough, that bond led to creative harmony, with Blake serving as a songwriter and vocal producer on Sparks’ third album, 2015’s Right Here, Right Now, in addition to providing guest vocals on deep cut “Unhappy.” As for what comes next, the pair have discussed the possibility of touring together — after their performance at the intimate 1990 Forever listening party at The Hotel Cafe in downtown Hollywood, Sparks is envisioning a laid-back tour of small clubs and theaters — but nothing is set in stone. – Read more at Billboard.com
Taylor Hicks returns to Birmingham to perform his “Idol” songbook – For the first time ever, he’ll perform his “American Idol Songbook.” He has made semi-regular visits to The Lyric in Birmingham; choosing various songbooks along the way. But this performance will be the first time he has explored all of the songs that kickstarted his career more than a decade ago. Before his visit, he spoke about what to expect from the forthcoming record, barbecue, golf and basketball. I think the move to ABC was a really smart move. I think ABC really suits the demographic that watches American Idol. ABC’s demo is a big reality television demo; The Bachelor does really well. There’s good mojo over there for a show like American Idol, and it shows in the ratings. They’re number one in their timeslot. It’s a good network for people that like American Idol. – Read more at JeffCoJournal.com
