Well, imagine my reaction when I opened up Twitter trends Thursday night (June 25) and see #ripSimonCowel trending. And NO Simon Cowell did not die. If he had, his name would be trending at the top! But it still gave me heart palpitations, for a minute. This screen grab has #ripSimonCowell trending at No. 6. But I saw it rank as high as No. 4.
You’re probably wondering how the former American Idol judge and creator of America’s Got Talent and X Factor wound up trending for such a macabre and untrue reason? I scrolled through the trend for a bit to discover that at around 5 pm ET, posters–mostly with anime characters as their avatars–started tagging #ripSimonCowell to their tweets, just for the LULZ. HILARIOUS! Or not.
Those meddlin’ kids even managed to edit Simon’s “death” into his Wikipedia page for a hot minute before an admin changed it back.
#ripsimoncowell Some wiseacre posted it up on Wikipedia. pic.twitter.com/5PkW9JKRTL

While the oldest tweets in the trend consist of kiddos perpetuating the hoax, the newer tweets are mostly jokes, people admitting they were freaked out before discovering Simon Cowell WAS NOT DEAD, and confusion.

In short: Simon Cowell is alive and well and currently taping the America’s Got Talent judge cuts round…using social distancing, of course. Because Simon surely does not want #ripSimonCowell to become a reality.
And the anime kids are probably plotting their next prank.
