American Idol ratings dipped on both Sunday and Monday nights. The show suffered airing against the Academy of Country Music Awards, and The Voice. Last seasons Idol contestants competing for a spot alongside this year’s singers just couldn’t trump a new Voice Knockout round featuring Mega Mentor Snoop Dogg. However, while the ACMs won Sunday night for CBS, its ratings dropped precipitously from pre-pandemic numbers.
All ratings are FINAL unless otherwise noted.
Sunday April 18: American Idol earned a 0.76 in key 18-49 demo and 5.4 million overall viewers. The Academy of Country Music awards on NBC nabbed 0.82 in the key demo and 6.2 million overall viewers. Although the ACMs won the night in both measures, it is down 49% from 2019’s 1.6 rating in the key demo. The 2020 telecast aired in September on a Wednesday night and earned a 1.1 in the key demo.
Monday April 19: American Idol and The Voice ran neck and neck last week in the 8-10 pm hours, with Idol edging out The Voice in the demo. This week, however, was a different story. American Idol fell from a 0.77 in the key demo last week to 0.59 and 4.2 million viewers this week. That rating in the key demo is probably a series low for American Idol. The Voice, on the other hand rose from 0.73 in the key demo last week to a 0.88 and 6.4 million viewers this week.
Looking at Monday’s preliminary numbers, American Idol 8 pm hour got 0.6 ratings, then dropped to a 0.5 in the 9 pm hour. The Voice on the other hand, started at 0.8 in the first hour, and rose to a 0.9 in the second. Did some singing show fans get part way through watching American Idol contestants from last year compete and think to themselves, “hmmm….I wonder what Snoop Doggy Dogg is up to?”
