More details are emerging about the ABC singing competition, rising Star. According to Billboard magazine, the grand prize for the winner of the competition is a recording contract with Capitol Records.
- The live show begins with 30 contestants who will perform for the approval of the “experts” Kesha, Ludacris and Brad Paisley and the viewing audience.
- Votes are logged via a phone app, which determine which of the 30 get put through to the second round, which begins with the 4th episode. The finale is August 24.
- Capitol will also be releasing full studio recordings of the songs performed on each show. The downloads will be available at the end of each episode. (It’s the first dip in the singing show waters for Capitol).

Capitol Music Group chairman and CEO Steve Barnett praised “Rising Star” as a concept that “utilizes the best of television and social/mobile media to introduce new artists to the public. Our involvement with this exciting platform will help broaden the reach of these just-discovered artists and share their music with their newly won fans nationwide.”
ABC is promoting this new show hard. The live aspect, and real time engagement across time zones is a new concept for singing competitions in America. We’ll see if it captures the imaginations of viewers. Or maybe, everyone is just sick of singing shows at this point.
