I have always found Ruben Studdard’s balladeering a little on the snoozy side. The American Idol Season 2 winner’s voice is like buttah, but I just can’t get into that whole “smooth R&B” thang.
That’s why I was super surprised listening to Ruben’s new single “June 28 (I’m Single) to find myself really digging it. This tune from the Season 2 Idol winner is pretty fantastic.
The song, which delves into the recent break-up of Ruben’s 2 year marriage is a throwback to those awesome soul jams of the 60s and 70s. Me likes. It’s sorta like a male Amy Winehouse. Very new/old soul. I’m going to be downloading this one.

Ruben’s next album, “Letters From Birmingham” is set to come out in March.
