Simon Cowell is back home from the hospital one week after breaking his back and undergoing surgery.

Simon Cowell happy to be back home

The America’s Got Talent creator and judge is “very happy to be back home with his family in the fresh sea air” of Malibu, California, a source told People on Sunday (Aug 16).

“He’s been doing some work already this week but he also knows he needs to give his back time to heal properly from the surgery,” the source added.

Simon fell off an electric bike in the courtyard of his Malibu home. After EMTs rushed him to the hospital, he endured a 5 hour surgery, involving fusions and metal rods. He broke his back in 3 spots and missed permanent paralysis by a few centimeters.

“He’s been able to walk quite a lot and quicker than the experts had expected him to do after this type of major surgery, which is a great sign for the healing coming along well,” the source claimed.

Simon is out at America’s Got Talent for the time being. American Idol OG winner, The Voice coach and talk show host Kelly Clarkson was tapped to fill in for the mogul last week. Simon watched the August 11 and August 12 episodes from his hospital room.

“The AGT production team had even sent him a giant X and a Golden Buzzer,” the source said. “He was delighted Kelly had stepped in to help and very grateful to her.”

While Simon is convalescing at home, his 6-year-old son Eric has put together a list of movies to watch together. “Muppets Most Wanted was top of the list which they both love,” the source said.

Simon plans to film BGT special in October

Meanwhile, The Sun reports that Simon will be filming in October for a one-off special of Britain’s Got Talent, which will air later this year, featuring some of the best acts to appear in the series’ history.

Oddly, the Sun report insists that Simon will travel to London to “take his place alongside Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and David Walliams for the 60-minute special being filmed in London.”

It seems hard to believe he’ll be well enough for a plane trip.  The Sun previously reported that Simon would take part in the BGT final, but remotely from America.

A source said: “Simon is a total workaholic and even an accident as nasty as his won’t keep him off for long. He’s been working from his home in Los Angeles since the accident happened and is in contact with his team.

“The plans for this one-off special of Britain’s Got Talent have been in the pipeline for months and he is convinced he will be well enough to take his place on the panel.”
