Saturday Night Live returned to NBC for its 43rd season last night with a cold open featuring Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump. Where to even start? Trump’s response to the Puerto Rican crisis, his obsession with NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem, his ever-dwindling cabinet. Kate McKinnon makes a triumphant return as attorney general Jeff Sessions. Savage. As usual, a cold opening not to be missed.
As far as the rest of the episode was concerned–it was hit or miss. Ryan Gosling hosted and couldn’t stop cracking up during his skits. Rapper Jay-Z gave two riveting performances. In the first, the first “Bam,” he wore a Colin Kaepernick jersey and featured Damien Marley. The second “4:44” paid anguished penance for hurting the woman (Beyonce) in his life.
