So You Think You Can Dance 10- Audition Episode #2- Live Blog and Discussion

It’s Mac. It’s a live blog. It’s Dance time. ROLL TIDE!

We are in Detroit tonight.

Twitch joins Mary and Nigel on the judging panel.

Jade Zuberi- Dearborn Heights, MI- Pop N Lock/Hip Hop
He has some sick stops. Effortless. His waving is incredible. This is the real deal. He has perfect control over every move he’s making. And he’s choreographed an interesting solo. I hope they don’t send him to choreo, just to send him home. He needs to go to Vegas. He gets a standing ovation from all three judges. Nigel says he didn’t want it to stop. Mary says the music was running through his body, and calls him a star. Twitch says it was one of the best audtions he’s ever seen. He goes straight to Vegas.

Amy Yakima- Northville, MI- Contemporary
Amy mentions that her dad learned to dance because she was dancing, so Nigel forces the dad to dance on stage. Nice to be humiliated on national TV. Amy dances, and honestly, she’s my favorite female so far. Quick moves, great leaps, and her floorwork is solid. I can feel the emotion from her dancing. She’s one to watch, for sure. Detroit is proving to be a hidden gem of talent so far. The music was incredible too. Great choice. She gets a standing ovation from all three judges. Nigel loves her extensions, and didn’t spot anything bad in her work. Mary thinks she was spectacular, and it sent the hair up on her arms. Twitch loved her emotion and passion.

Morgan Williams- Chicago, IL- Contemporary
Morgan says his abs are better than Twitch’s, immediately. Awkward. His grandma died recently, so he dedicates his audition to her. He’s dancing to Goodbye My Lover (James Blunt). It’s pretty average for me. Adequate in technique, but nothing that leaps out at me. Nigel says yes to choreography, Mary overrides him and gives him a ticket to Vegas.

Now we get a lesson on a Detroit dance, Jittin. It’s like hip hop mixed with lindy hop.

Sysko- Detroit, MI- Jittin
Sysko gets Cat to dance a little with him before his audition. This is a little closer to Twitch’s style, so I’m interested what he thinks. There are some cool moves here, but nothing that screams Vegas. Nigel asks if he’s done any other styles of dance. He says he can do a hip roll, and he takes his shirt off, and Mary joins him on stage. This is basically a modified stripper dance. It’s more entertaining than his solo, only because of everyones reactions. Mary’s a good sport. Nigel thinks he’s a great showman and says yes to choreo, Mary says yes, and Twitch says yes, so he’s through to choreography.

Twitch takes the stage for a second, and dances like Sysko. After the commercial, more Twitch dancing. If this was an audition, it would be the best audition of the day.

Garret Frye- Bowling Green- Hip Hop
This is definitely a joke audition. He describes his style as “panic and have fun with it” and admits he has no idea what he’s doing. He scoots around on the floor, does a couple B-Boy poses, stands on his head, and does some humiliating dance club moves. It’s terrible. He starts doing jumping jacks. Twitch says Garret is the man, but it’s not strong enough for the competition. Mary says Garret is fun, and calls him the crazy wedding guy. Garrett was a dancing statue of liberty at one point in his career. Nigel says no. Mary says no.

Sysko learns choreo from Marko and Sasha. Nigel literally stops Sysko during the audition, because he’s freestyling and could hurt his partner. So it’s a no for Sysko.

Tyrone Cobham, Jr- Toledo, OH- Tapper
He’s got endurance for days. Super fast tapper, and he uses his entire body in the dance. We’ve had some incredible tappers on the show before. Is he the best? No. But he is a fantastic dancer. Nigel says he’s one of the best tappers they’ve ever had. Mary says that he was the best tapper in all ten seasons because he has magnificent stage presence. Tyrone starts to cry. Twitch says he wishes he could be as smooth as Tyrone was. Nigel gives him a ticket to Vegas.

A montage of dancers who brought their family members with them. There’s the family that painted Briana on their chest. There’s the girl who brought her crazy asian grandma with her. There’s the girl who brought her army dad with her. The girl with the asian grandmother is something special, in the 2 seconds we see her. I wish we had seen more.

We have a group of male strippers. Literally. They are actually strippers.

Smilez- Detroit, MI- Hip Hop/ Krump
He’s entertaining. Makes a joke about krumpin in the womb. It’s a short solo, but very strong work. Great krumping, some hip hop, and even a bit of breaking.

Prince Charming- Detroit, MI- Pop N Lock/Hip Hop
He’s mouthing the lyrics to the words of the song… which is annoying. But he’s a solid dancer. I don’t love him as much as Smilez, and we’ve seen better poppers with better tricks.

The whole crew comes on stage, including the three we haven’t seen. Only the two we’ve seen are being put through to choreography. We then see the choreo round. The boys think the routine is too hard. Nigel cuts Smilez after his performance. Prince Charming is genuinely surprised when he gets his ticket to Vegas.

Next week, Minnie Driver joins the judging panel. The Exorcist is back. Hope you enjoyed my blog. I’m back next week. Sound off in the comments below!
