Fans may have noticed that it’s March, and still no word of a So You Think You Can Dance renewal. Typically, producers announce audition details by January, at least. Indeed, last year, the veteran FOX dance competition shut down production due to the pandemic right before the start of auditions.
Unfortunately, according to sources at TV Line, “although progress has been made with regard to shooting live television in the age of COVID, Fox and its SYTYCD production partners at 19 Entertainment and Dick Clark Productions are, at this time, not moving forward with the show’s already-delayed 17th season.”
Two cancellations in a row leaves the fate of SYTYCD up in the air. However, a FOX source told TV Line that the network is not closing the door on the show returning at some point. “The safety of everyone involved — contestants, studio audience, judges, host and production staff — remains our top priority,” the source said.
What isn’t a top priority to FOX, obviously, is So You Think You Can Dance. The show has been on the bubble for the last few seasons due to low ratings. But I imagine that FOX deems the extra expense to implement COVID protocols in order to produce the show simply not worth it for the network.
We’ll probably get another season of the Masked Dancer instead. Heh.
