After a 5 week hiatus, Songland comes back to NBC on a new day and time. The show will now air on Wednesday’s at 9 pm ET/PT after the America’s Got Talent results show.

And for the first time, the songwriting competition will feature a duo. Pop Culture aka Matthew Boda and Callan Searcy, a songwriting/production team out of Kansas City, hopes to land a song with this week’s guest artist, Macklemore. It makes sense to have a duo competing this week, as the rapper and hip hop artist is best known as part of the hit making duo (“Same Love,” “Thrift Shop”), Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

In a preview from Wednesday’s show (Aug 14), watch Pop Culture perform their original composition “City Kids” for panelists Ryan Tedder, Ester Dean and Shane Mcanally. At this point, the song is only a backing track, ready to be expanded upon. Macklemore is impressed by its “swag,” calling the track, “very triumphant.” He adds, “I kind of wanted to get out of my chair.”

Ryan warns off lyrics that are too “on the nose,” calling the track a “slacker anthem.”  Shane calls the track inspiring, “I love music that makes me feel something when there aren’t even words. Imagine where you can take it.”

Esther begins to freestyle some lyrics, and the others join in, adding various bits and pieces. It’s barely a song now, it will be interesting to see where the team takes it.
