In an interview with the Canadian entertainment show, E Talk, ex American Idol judge, Steven Tyler responded to new Idol judge, Nicki Minaj’s charge that he’s a racist. Nicki had fired off a series of angry tweets, where she called the Aerosmith frontman a racist among other things. This was in response to Steven voicing his concerns to MTV News about Nicki’s ability to judge hopefuls.Via ENews
The former American Idol judge is sorry that Nicki Minaj found his comments to be racist. “I apologize if it was taken wrong, Nicki,” the Aerosmith rocker said Tuesday on eTalk, a Canadian entertainment show.
“But I am the farthest from [being a racist],” he said. “I am the last thing on this planet as far as being a racist. I don’t know where she got that out of me saying I’m not sure how she would’ve judged Bob Dylan.”
“Maybe I spoke out of turn,” he said. “But a racist I’m not, Nicki.”
Nicki, who can’t seem to sit on her hands when she’s criticized in the press, fired off a series of tweets after Steven told MTV he thought she “would have sent [Dylan] to the cornfield” if the legendary folksinger had auditioned for Idol. Steven insisted he only meant, “if Bob Dylan came on the show, he would’ve been thrown off.”
So, is that an apology sort of? Neither was right in this instance. Steven should have held off his opinion about Nicki until he actually had the chance to watch her in action. And Nicki needs to shut it. Sadly, in this instance, and the Mariah Carey feud, she was reacting to provocation. But she’ll forever be the party to look bad if she can’t handle criticism and baiting in a mature manner.
But then, maybe it doesn’t bother her to have a reputation for being crazy and unpredictable. I have a feeling Nigel Lythgoe is loving the publicity.
