The Voice and American Idol alum Sundance Head accidently shot himself while hunting by himself
The Voice and American Idol alum Sundance Head is recovering from a hunting accident where he accidently shot himself.
On Friday, the singer’s wife Misty posted on Facebook, “I don’t have a lot of information but please keep Sundance in your prayers. Sundance has been life flighted with a gun shot wound to his stomach per the paramedics who called me….They did get him stable for the flight (per the paramedic) We are on our way to Tyler now…Please just keep him in your prayers.”
In an update later that day after arriving at the hospital she wrote, “He’s in good spirits considering the last several hours. Kids are in with him now. Prayers answered as no internal damage was done by the bullet. Thank you all for the prayers.”
The gun fell out of Sundance’s holster and went off, piercing his stomach
Basically, Sundance’s gun fell out of his holster and went off. Misty explained in detail:
“He’s at the ranch hunting by himself went up yesterday the boys were coming up this evening to join him for a weekend together and well this happened. It was not his hunting rifle and no nobody shot him. He was out of the vehicle reaching in to grab his 22 when he grabbed it the 22 came out of its holster and hit the exterior of the Jeep just right and went off. Sundance said it happened so fast and he could see the bullet dislodging. I thought he called 911 he didn’t–he put his hands in pocket for phone immediately after getting hit but phone wasn’t there just filled with blood so he took off down the driveway out to the main road to flag a car down for help. 10 cars later someone turned around to help and called 911.”
The bullet missed all vital organs, the doctors decided to leave it in
A doctor told Misty that the bullet “went in above his navel and lodged into his abdominal wall missing all vital organs.” Initially, Misty thought he would need surgery. But the doctors decided not to remove the bullet. Apparently, Sundance’s girth saved him according to Misty. “Bullet is in his fatty tissue. Thanks for all the prayers,” she wrote.
On Saturday, November 16, Misty posted a photo of Sundance’s bullet shorn shirt. Misty drove him home still in his hospital gown, while he bled through his dressings. “Any higher or lower would have been devastating,” Misty said regarding where the bullet entered his body.
“I was sure I was going to die”
Finally, on Sunday, November 17, Sundance posted a video updating his fans. Sundance credits the first responders and trauma team at UT Tyler for keeping him alive and doing a “wonderful job.” He added, “I was sure I was going to die,” adding “It’s one of the craziest things that’s ever happened to me.” He admits to being in a lot of pain. “I have a lot of life left,” he said. The scary thing–he was alone, driving, looking for help while bleeding out. Ten cars passed him by before a good samaritan stopped to assist him. If motorists had continued to ignore him, he might not have made it, he said.
Sundance won The Voice Season 11 in 2016 as a member of team Blake Shelton. But before the NBC competition show, the singer competed on American Idol season 6 in 2007, making it to the Top 24 semi-final round. He was eliminated at the Top 16, right before the finals.
Sundance is the son of 60s singer Roy Head, who stormed the charts in 1965 with the hit, “Treat Her Right” which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard charts. Only The Beatles “Yesterday” kept him from the No. 1 spot.
The Voice Blind Audition
Sundance auditioned for The Voice with a rendition of “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.” His parents attended his audition, but have since passed away. Blake Shelton and Adam Levine both turned their chairs.
Sundance’s American Idol audition
After making fun of his name, judge Simon Cowell called him one of the “best auditions” of that American Idol season and declared he would make the finals.
