The Masked Singer 12 Week 10: Who Was Unmasked on Quarter Finals Night?
The Masked Singer season 12 continues on to week 10 with Nick Cannon as host, Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Rita Ora on the judges panel. This week, the competition moves on to the Quarter Finals as the winners of Groups A, B and C fight for a spot in the Semi Finals. ONE celebrity mask will leave the competition.
Tonight’s group includes: Strawberry Shortcake, Wasp, Goo and Buffalos.
Nick introduces The Final Four to the stage. But they only stand around for a bit before retreating backstage. The Top 4 will perform. The Top 2 will immediately advance to the Semis. Then, the remaining two masks will compete in the Smackdown. The winner moves on, the loser leaves the competition.
Wasp
Clues: He had a hard time finding true love. He lived in the fast lane at first. but finally he found true love.
Performance: Standing Next To You by Jungkook – Wasp sings employing a smooth falsetto. He’s obviously a professional, evidenced by his equally smooth dance moves. His exciting performance gets the audience involved. Each singer will receive a phone call from a loved one. His best friend and cousin calls in. He’s a guy and drops that Wasp starred in one of the biggest shows of the decade. Rita guesses Mario (YEP. That’s who it is). She notes that Mario starred in the musical Rent. Ken guesses Usher. Jenny guesses Maxwell. Robin doesn’t guess. I’d be shocked if he didn’t recognize Mario’s vocals.
Prediction: Wasp is R&B singer Mario. In one of his clue packages, he shared that his late mother struggled. Mario’s mom battled heroine addiction. He appeared in a documentary which dealt with his quest to help her get sober.
Goo
Clues: Goo confesses that he doesn’t sing for a living. “A test drive of my other passion.” His fiance is by his side.
Performance: Iris by Goo Goo Dolls. – Actually, he’s an OK singer. I mean, compare him to Wasp. He’s not a professional. However he can carry a tune. Maybe if he had taken that road instead of the one he actually took, he would have developed the skills. My guess is the Battle Royale will be between Goo and Strawberry Shortcake. The phone call clue is his fiance “You melt my heart…I haven’t been this proud of you since you got that call that changed your life forever.” Goo is all gooey at the moment. Robin guesses former LA Ram Aaron Donald. MY GUY WE GRADUATED FROM THE SAME HIGH SCHOOL Penn Hills High School in Western PA YAY. But pretty sure he does not sing. Plus, he’s married with kids. Jenny guessed Kobie Turner. Rita guessed John Cena. which sounds reasonable.
Strawberry Shortcake
Clues: She’s been part of a packaged bunch. She’s never stood on her own. Her friends and family are on other exciting adventures. Her loved ones are proud of her.
Performance: Closer by Tegan and Sara – She’s a solid pop singer–but her sound is generic Disney. That’s why the panel is have a hard time guessing her identity (They have not yet). Phone call clue: It’s her sister. She’s proud. “I’m always with you. Me and your nephew are rooting for you.” Strawberry says she’s a new aunt. Ken guesses Katy Perry. He’s nuts. Jenny guesses Haylie Duff. Robin guesses it’s Danielle Haim from the sister band Haim.
Prediction: The internets say Strawberry Shortcake is AJ Michalka from the sister duo Aly & AJ. Apparently, she’s good friends with her “Masked Ambassador” Hayley Orrantia.
Buffalos
Clues: They have been on a long journey. They are more than friends. Everything they did together was called off at one point. But they overcame the problem and went on. “Without family, we are nothing.”
Performance: You’re Still the One by Shania Twain – The triio sings a ballady arrangement of the country hit. They will probably compete in the final, with those lovely harmonies and sweet lead vocals. Phone call clue: It’s Babyface! The trio finally got the chance to work with the famed producer. It changed their lives. Robin guesses Temptations. Well, the originals are all dead. Ken guesses Tony! Tony! Tony! Rita guesses Blackstreet. The panel is being purposely obtuse.
Prediction: Buffalos are the 90s acapella group, Boyz II Men. One of their clue packages pointed to a terrible tragedy that nearly ended the group The band’s manager early in their career was murdered.
First Result and SMACKDOWN
The audience and panel voted. Nick says the totals were close. Two singers are safe and will move on to the Semi Finals. They are: Wasp and Buffalos! I predicted that correctly. The two who made it are the professional of the remaining singers.
Now, Goo and Strawberry Shortcake compete in a SMACKDOWN. Goo sings “Hold On, I’m Coming” by Sam and Dave. Guess the Isaly peeps don’t care if Goo sings their song. Heh (They successfully sued Trump). Now, Strawberry Shortcake sings “Scars to Your Beautiful” by Alessia Cara. She’s the better singer and will likely prevail. Also, she will give the Semi Finals variety (rather than have 3 R&B singers compete).
Who was unmasked?
The singer taking the final spot in next week’s semi-finals is…Strawberry Shortcake! Goo will unmask. Final guesses: Rita: John Cena. Ken: Shaquille O’Neal. Robin: Aaron Donald. (Would be SO COOL. but no). Jenny: Kobie Turner. And Goo is Kobie Turner. Jenny got it right. He says that music has been a huge part of his life since he was kid. He shares that the experience brought healing to his life.
