The Masked Singer 12 Week 3: Who Was Unmasked on Soundtrack of My Life night?

The Masked Singer season 12 continues on to week 3 with Nick Cannon as host, Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Rita Ora on the panel. This week, the panel celebrates the Group A finalists “Soundtrack of My Life.”

The returning group a mystery celebrities include Buffalos, Ship, and Woodpecker. TWO celebrities will be unmasked by the end of the night, leaving one to move on to the quarter finals. The first elimination will come after the performances and a vote. The remaining celebrities will face off in a Battle Royale. The panel then decides who leaves the competition

Big news. Or not! The Ding Dong Keep it On Bell is back. If the panel wants to save a singer, it can ONLY SAVE ONE singer across three group finals.

The three Group A Finalists open the show with a performance of “High Hopes” by Panic at the Disco! OMG FLOATING COWS!

Ship

Clues: She was shipwrecked and broke. She sang backup on an international tour. John Wayne is clue. “It’s so unlike me” to be on the show.

Performance: Because the Night by Patti Smith – She’s got to be a pop singer who was/is a huge star. The voice sounds familiar, but I can’t quite place it. Her voice is throaty and deep. In the last chorus she shows off her range. On Stage Clue: Congrats on Best New Artist Win signed Leann 1998. Ken guesses Alanis Morissette. Rita guesses Nora Jones. Jenny guesses Paula Cole. Ship says she’s an introvert. She watches the show with her daughter.

Prediction: Paula Cole won Best New Artist at the 1998 Grammys. Upon reflection, Ship sounds like her. Pretty sure we’ve got it.

Woodpecker

Clues: Her family is rooting for them. She comes from a long line of “chicks.” Regina Hall is a clue. Her grandmother introduced her to jazz. Hamburger is a clue.

Performance: Put Your Records On by Corinne Bailey Rae – This song fits her vocals. Woodpecker doesn’t have a strong or big range. But she can style a song and has a pretty tone. She is the weakest act of the masks remaining, though. On Stage Clue: A pair of glasses. “these glasses remind me of how I got my start. I can see clearly now that I got my start.” Nick says he knows who it is. Robin guesses Liza Koshy. Ken guesses Quinta Brunson. Jenny guesses Tatiana Ali. If Woodpecker’s grandma is still alive, she can’t be an old lady.

Buffalos

Clues: They lost someone who helped their career. They sang as they put him to rest. But they kept going, knowing that he’d want it that way.

Performance: Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve – The choreography is so on point, that the trio is obviously a singing group who have been together a long while. They sing in counterpoint like it’s the easiest thing in the world. On Stage Clue: They say they’ve been in the industry a long time. The clue is a t-shirt with “half time show.” “This performance was in front of one of the biggest audiences in the world.” Jenny guesses Boys II Men. Ken guesses Bone Thugs and Harmony. Rita guesses the Black Eyed Peas.

Prediction: Buffalos are likely Boyz II Men. They are a singing group that has been together a long time, They started as a quartet, but are now a trio. And the DID play the Super Bowl Halftime show. AND their tour manager, Roderick “Khalil” Rountree, was murdered in Chicago during their 1992 Tour with MC Hammer. The group dedicated their performance of “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” to Rountree. In fact, I recall member Shawn Stockman sharing that during one of his stints as a singing show judge. I agree with one of the panelists who suspects they were holding back their full singing chops before this week. The first two weeks, the group yucked it up, mostly.

First Elimination

The singer unmasking first tonight is….The Woodpecker. Yep. She’s the weakest singer. Final guesses: Robin: Liza Koshy. Rita: Keke Palmer. Ken: Quinta Brunson. Jenny: Taliana Ali. And The Woodpecker is…Marsai Martin from the TV comedy Blackish and more. Nick knew who it was. They are friends. Marsai was an Executive Producer at 14! She broke Nick’s record at 19. Her grandmother never misses an episode. She sings out with “I Need a Hero.”

Battle Royale

Ship and Buffalos will perform the SAME song in their own styles. Ship sings “Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac first. This song is right in he wheelhouse. Next Boyz II Men sing a soulful version of the song. Flipping the arrangement will probably work for them. If the panel doesn’t save somebody this week, Buffalos probably got this. Especially since only the panel decides

Second elimination

On the way out, the panel decided to save the Bell for another group (two more are coming up, 10 celebrities remain!) The winner of the Battle Royale is…Buffalos. So funny, the panel behave as if they don’t know the results when they decided. The Ship is eliminated. Final guesses: Rita: Sarah McLaughlin, Ken: Alanis Morissette, Jenny: Paula Cole (DING DING DING), Robin: Amy Lee And Ship IS Paula Cole! I knew it! She was a huge star in the late 90s! She sings out with her big hit “I Don’t Want to Wait for Our Lives to Be Over” which was the theme song for the WB drama Dawson’s Creek.

Buffalos move on to the Quarterfinals
