The Masked Singer 9 Week 5 Recap: Sesame Street Night!
The Masked Singer season 9 continues with Week 5 theme Sesame Street Night, featuring Nick Cannon as host, Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger on the judges panel.
The season 8 format remains unchanged. Three costumed celebrities will perform for the studio and judges panel votes. A celeb will be unmasked in the middle of the show. The remaining two celebrities will go head to head in a “Battle Royal.” The winner moves on to compete again in next week’s “Country Night.” The loser will be the second celebrity to unmask.
There is a new twist, however, that allows the judges to save one singer per round. Each of the saved celebrities from each of the three rounds will compete against each other in a special wildcard show.
Tonight’s celebrity costumes: New masks Fairy and Jackalope will join the returning Squirrel. All three are hoping to win the round and advance to the quarterfinals.
The show opens with a bunch of beloved characters including Big Bird, The Count, Elmo and more singing “Dynamite.” So cute! The special guest panelist is Jennifer Nettles, who is hosting the new reality dating show that airs next, Farmer Wants a Wife.
Squirrel
Clue: Squirrel is the reigning mask. A smiley face, Swedish meatballs, and a wedding dress are clues.
Performance: Just The Two of Us – She’s sing talking the song, which is pitched too low for her. A good singer is going to give Squirrel some big competition tonight. By far, her worst performance so far. Football player Damir Hamlin (who had a heart attack on the field last fall) delivers the clue! And then Jenny shouts the jab almost killed you. Just kidding. She was probably just thinking it. Damir’s little brother introduced him. The clue is a football with Ken’s face on it “This isn’t the first time we worked together….maybe more than once.” Ken guesses Katherine Heigl. Nicole guesses Kate Hudson. She’s very very confident. But also very wrong. Jenny guesses Malin Akerman. DING DING DING. Jenny is correct. Jennifer guesses Anne Hathaway.
Fairy
Clues: She’s a bit of a Nepo fairy. Her dad was famous. Panther. A basketball. The friends she grew up with. She went to college and travelled the world. She pursued singing and acting.
Performance: You’re No Good by Linda Ronstadt. – Fairy is a decent enough singer. Although she lacks Linda Ronstadt’s pipes, she has a nice tone. She could dethrone Squirrel. On stage clue: “Endless Love” delivered by Cookie Monster. “This clue should be music to your ears a timeless classic that should mean more than romance.” Jenny guesses Tracee Ellis Ross. She might be on to something. Ken guesses Angelina Jolie. The audience boos. Robin guesses Rashida Jones.
Jackalope
Clues: She’s’ stepping into the ring. She wasn’t very social as a kid. She pioneered other ways to express herself. A necklace with a G. She deals with trolls. “Wednesdays.”
Performance: Whenever, Wherever by Shakira – She’s yodeling her way through a Spanish song, which she seems comfortable singing. She might have a Latin background. Her style is similar to Shakira, boasting a fast vibrato. Perhaps she’s a young influencer. Jackalope “partied” with Nicole once. Onstage clue: 30 under 30. She’s on a list with Donald Glover. Nicole guesses Lele Pons. Jennifer guesses Camila Cabello. LOL NO. Jenny guesses the actress who plays Wednesday in the streaming series, Jenny Ortega.
1st Unmasking
The first singer getting unmasked is…The Squirrel! She lost her crown quick! Oh noes! Final guesses. Robin: Heather Graham. Ken: Katherine Heigl. Nicole: Kate Hudson Jennifer: Anne Hathaway Jenny: Malin Akerman. A light bulb just went off in Ken’s head. And the Squirrel is Malin Akerman. She worked with Ken in Couples Retreat. Malin’s family is here. I didn’t know that was allowed. Makes me question whether she planned to leave the competition this week.
Battle Royale
The Jackalope and Fairy sing “On Top of the World” by Imagine Dragons in their own style. Jackalope sings a jaunty version. Fairy takes over and there is barely a difference between the two. How to even make a decision based on that. The panel and the panel only votes for the winner. They used their one save for the three week round LAST WEEK.
2nd Unmasking
The champion of the night advancing to next week is…Fairy! Jackalope is UNMASKED. Big bird crowns Fairy before she leaves the stage. Final guesses: Nicole: Lele Pons Jenny: Jenny Ortega Ken: Selena Gomez Jennifer: Camila Cabello. HELL NO TOO FAMOUS. And Jackalope is Lele Pons. Whoever that is. Nick co-hosted the Kids Choice with her.
