She was no Rihanna–who gave what approximated to a vocal and performance masterclass in her sessions last season–but Miley Cyrus handed out solid advice to The Voice contestants as they prepared for the Knockout Rounds. She’s been singing and performing long enough to know what works and what doesn’t, generally speaking. Other than Alisan Porter who has shot several movies and has had lots of experience performing in clubs and Owen Danoff who has been gigging around and has his own one-hit-wonder for a father, Miley has plenty of experience to share with the singers.
Some of the results were really odd, and cements my belief there’s nothing random about how these pairings are put together and turn out. The most stunning to me was coach Adam Levine giving up Ryan Quinn. The singer wasn’t at his best tonight, but he was Adam’s best chance for a win this year. Yet…he hands him over to Christina. The Voice would love to break that “girl curse” this season, ideally with a coach/contestant combo. But I guess, if Christina wins with a guy like Ryan, that’s acceptable too.
Adam did acquire the talented Shalyah Fearing but it’s going to be tough. A young black R&B singer is not exactly in Adam’s wheelhouse. I hope he mentors her well, but I don’t see him winning with her. On the other hand, Adam excels at mentoring pop/rock dudes like Ryan. Pharrell giving up Shalyah to hang onto Emily Keener–that had me scratching my head. Poor Shalyah is so talented and the coaches are treating her like a hot potato.
Who were your favorite contestants tonight? I thought Alisan Porter, Hannah Huston, Shalyah Fearing and Paxton Ingram were stars tonight, with honorable mentions going to Owen Danoff and Emily Keener. Overall, some pretty terrific talent on this first night of the Knockouts.
