Remember when we revealed The Voice Cross Battles twist for this season? We now have more information regarding how the round will proceed. The Battle Rounds will conclude with part 4 on Tuesday April 8. Typically, the 32 remaining contestants would compete in the Knockout rounds. In the knockouts, coaches pair up team members who perform songs they choose. The coaches– Adam Levine, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson or Blake Shelton–picks one singer. The loser is available for a steal.
But not so fast! The show teased the twist at the end of Monday’s (April 1) show: “In Two Weeks…A Twist…No One Will See Coming.” Except we DID see it coming, thanks to details found in the “How to Play” section of the The Voice phone app, which namechecked the “live Cross Battles” as the round after the Battles, rather than the Knockouts.
Apparently, the twist has been featured on The Voice Holland and several other versions around the world. The way it works: Beginning Monday April 15 the show will go live. Two artists from different teams will go head to head, with viewers at home voting their favorites into the live finals. The episodes will air across four nights: Monday April 15, Tuesday April 15, Monday April 22, and Tuesday April 23. According to a description at Futon Critic. Mondays are performance shows, while Tuesdays will reveal the results.
What’s weird, Knockout Round tapings were schedule up until the end of January, according to 1ota.com, the ticketing website that fills The Voice studio audience.
According to commenter, Heartly, who follows Kelly Clarkson fan sites:
They initially had 2 tapings scheduled each for Tuesday (2/5) and Wednesday (2/6). They dropped a taping each day a couple weeks before, then moved the Tuesday one to Wednesday bringing it to 2 that day. Then they cancelled the Wednesday taping the week before (1/29) it was to happen. Which was weird because the teams were definitely filming with their coaches that week when the tapings were pulled. I had also noticed on instagram that weekend (2/2-3) that some riggers were posting from the studio at Universal and they were taking down the set. Basically, I was confused on what was happening because nothing was adding up.
Why the last minute switcheroo I wonder? The Voice dropping four Tuesday episodes this season resulted in the Battles ending three weeks later than usual. Last spring, the Live Playoffs kicked off during the same week as this year’s Cross Battles. With only six weeks remaining in the season post Battles, the scheduling would have been tight.
