One thing John Legend has stated about The Voice artists? He really doesn’t love it when they choose to cover one of his songs. So, when an artist covers him anyway, they are taking a huge risk.
But in a few rare instances, John has turned for one of his own songs. For instance, on the upcoming The Voice season 20 premiere, soul singer Victor Solomon delivered such an impassioned version of John’s “Glory” that the coach couldn’t help but hit his button. Blake Shelton was the first to turn, however, followed by Nick Jonas.
Blake has a major CRINGE moment
Blake marveled that a 22 year old would present an “old man’s voice.” Victor explains that he grew up singing in church. “Gospel is my go to,” he says. Blake touts that he and his last winner, pastor Todd Tilghman, did “a lot of gospel together.” Hilariously, Blake has no idea that “Glory” is John’s song. WELP! Stick a fork in him.
Kelly Clarkson didn’t turn, because once John did, she thought, “I don’t have a chance here.” You know, after Victor nailed John’s Oscar winning song, which Blake had no idea about!
Nick offers that he grew up in the church with his pastor dad. “Why don’t we work together to make John proud, and have this all start with you singing YOUR ACADEMY AWARD WINNING SONG.” Nick has gotta rub it in to a clueless Blake.
Then, John completely destroys his fellow coaches chances as he describes the genesis of the song. Victor and John obviously have a connection. What’s more, John thinks Victor did some things with the song that he didn’t do. “He was better than me!” John declares.
John and Victor duet! But who will Victor choose?
Victor admits that he sang “Ordinary People” in the 8th grade, which prompts John to kick off an on-the-spot duet with the hopeful. “Wait a minute!” jokes Blake, “who’s song is that?”
When it’s time to choose a coach, Victor claims he’s gonna shake things up, and then CLIFFHANGER. Hm. If you really want to know. We’ve got a bunch of spoilers! BUT KEEP SPOILER TALK UNDER THE SPOILER THREAD PLEASE AND THANK YOU.
